The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement
Wow. The battery better be bigger to deal with that monster of a screen.

It's still basically a giant phone.

Until it can push real PC grade graphics and has real game devs on board, it remains, no thanks.

Oh there's no chance I would buy one but that is shaping up to be a mighty screen.

Considering most HD tellys are 40" because the industry says that HD isn't really worth it on anything below that size it amuses the fuck out of me that the new ishit has a resolution higher than I've ever used.

Wouldnt that be a bit pointless with a touch screen?

It's to do with dpi and the perceived sharpness and quality a high pixel density brings.

As for your TV comment, 4K and UHD are on their way.

Been to a digital cinema lately? 2K and 4K are the future of big displays, perhaps more in the enthusiast market but 1080p and 1080i will be replaced eventually.

Surely a cinema isn't a big display but rather a massive display compared to whatever people have in their home.

Pointlessly :)

Even Lawrence of Arabia was just as good a story on my 200-lines VHS. Admittedly, it was prettier in a 70mm print when I went to see it at the Pictureville Cinema in Bradford many moons ago, but the story was no better...

Agree with completely. Perfect example, Star Wars, first saw it in 1977 in the Flea Pit in Aldershot, the screen had a crack in it, was totally shit but the story was what I walked away with, not the visuals or how high the resolution was.

For me, 1080p is great enough quality, my 40" tv displays the stuff I want to watch perfectly, my amp decodes my bitstream audio perfectly and my aging ears still love the music that I can hear although I know I am now old enough to not hear certain frequencies. Higher resolution on a smaller screen does not make sense. Next year the iPad will have the same screen size but 100 million pixels..... :p Actually, what is the resolution of the eye (cannot be arsed to Google)? Ie, at what point does the eye max out?

I just heard:

"I'm an aging dude".

I've been quite ageist of late, but nothing quite beats Tom's "bottle of pop" comment for a showing of age.

Real LED TV's are next with Samsung releasing one this year. The Picture is reported to be phenomenal. I am not sure what the res will be but i doubt 1080 is going to be big enough to be native not if he Sony OLED is anything to go by. I do not know if we need bigger but if it improves picture quality then why not. The retina display is very good on the phone so I may upgrade my iPad1 to a iPad3 quad core improved display is a good enough upgrade for me.

Apple TV 3 is also on my shopping list as XBMC on it will be sweet. A Raspberry Pi is cheaper but not easier.

I imagine most people are going to be sitting a lot closer to their iPad than they would a 40" TV. That makes a big difference on what resolution looks smooth.

You can have all the resolution you like, but it's the bitrate of the media that matters, I have 1080 movies on the my projector that look like shit.
Remember people, quality not megapixels.
O and the ishites..they don't have usb or sd slots..stares with 'duh' look on face.

Well the ipad2 is what £600? Quad core + super duper screen res + greed + the mug factor (every apple fanboi will get one) has got to put another bottle on top. I'm guessing an £800 price tag.

You shouldn't guess when the prices are already up on the apple site...

What tends to happen is they replace the previous product at the same price, so the iPad 3 will start out at the £399 of the iPad 2 while the iPad 2 will drop in price and when the iPad 2 originally came out it actually had a starting price £30 lower than the original iPad which also shifted down in price.
