What I think this thread shows is a swing towards dishonesty than honesty. As Toto says, thats life. Might not be moral, but its the way things are.

It's very seldom you get anything for your troubles when helping a fellow man.

I remember once, I had lost my cc on my way from the pub, and in the morning I woke up to a knock on the door where an elderly woman, a perfect stranger to me, stood. I had a massive hangover and wasn't very receptive or eager to hear the lecture she gave me about keeping my belongings secure. On the contrary, I was quite annoyed; she had called up everyone with the same surname who lived in the same city -- there aren't that many by my surname here -- asking where I live.

The moral of the story? If you find my cc, take it to the police or drop it in a mailbox -- I don't care -- as long as you don't wake me at 10 AM for a lecture or atleast have the decency to wait until the late afternoon.

PS. Can you believe it; after lecturing me about how reckless and foolish I am, she just stood there, obviously waiting for a reward. I, however, disagreed; I took the card, thanked the lady and said goodbye, shut the door and went back to my dying. Shame on me.

So basically, it's a selfish act of altruism from which I derive some gratification from.

Lost my wallet on Oxford Street when i used to work for a infotech company a few years ago and believe it or not i had the wallet+all contents handed in to a police station.

Have found many wallets in the past and always hand them in with full contenets to nearest police station. I have even gotten a nifty-fifty for me troubles as well from one happy owner who was due to go on holiday the next day.
