OK, so forget cancer for the minute. Just imagine the day your mom / dad dies. Its comes to all of us. It is going to impact your life in ways you can't fathom.

You'll wish you could have spent just 5 minutes more with them rather than doing whatever.

For me, I am spending a great deal of time with my mom and dad. And my family. For me thats making the best use of the time thats been given to me.

If other people's priorities are sitting in front of DAOC smoking dope and having fantasies about having sex and killing people, well...thats up to them.

Let me just point out the flaw in your argument here (and it is a f**king big flaw).

You have no more than 80 years left to live.. this is pretty much a cold hard fact.

You chose to spend some (in fact a fair bit looking at your sig) of that time playing DAoC. This implies to me that in the limited amount of time you had left you figured playing DAoC was worth spending some of that on.

The only difference between the 24 hour scenario and the 80 year scenario is in the 24 hour scenario the amount of punishment that can be applied for "breaking the law" or "harming yourself" is much smaller in relation to the pleasure you might get from doing it.

We are all currently living the 50 years following as if it's our last, cos in 90% of your cases it's going to be. Reduce that number to 24 hours and all you do is limit peoples inhibitions as to what they think can get away with.. If you figure playing DAoC is a crap use of your last 24 hours, then remember it (a) might actually be your last 24 hours starting now, no-one ever knows and (b) you've just spent a year of your last 50 playing DAoC.. that's no different to spending 30 mins from your last 24 hours doing it at the end of the day.

Personally I can think of much worse things to be doing than hanging out having a laugh with some mates doing something we all enjoy. It's probably slightly different because I play in the same room as 2 other people, so i'm not shutting myself alone in a room somewhere. Everyone who's said i'd get f**ked on drugs is really saying, some fantasy blurry fake existance sounds better than mine so i'd like to spend my final time there instead of in my currently life, which I think personally is more sad.
