I want less spam emails!

I would imagine that I used to get at least 20 spam emails a day. At first I would block them, then I tried going to the always broken link that says remove at the bottom of the email. Then I started writing back to the sender saying that I shall report them to thier ISP if they dont stop sending me emails. This did work but these people use false or in somecases one email account just for spamming once, then go create another.
Hotmail seems to be the worst. I used to get about 30 a day on there and eventually I started using the junk filter option. Since then I have 0 emails in my inbox and 70 new emails in my junk folder everyday.
However I dont use my hotmail inbox unless something requires me to enter an email address, which looks like it could start sending me unwanted emails. My main email is my yahoo account. This unfortunatly does not have a decent email filtering system.
In my quest im trying to find a decent piece of software, which will stop these mofo's once and for all, I found this link.
http://www.unsubscribelist.com/default.asp
Although this doesnt appear to work as good as I thought it might.

Any ideas on stopping these aholes?

First, NEVER click the link that purports to unsubscribe you from whatever spam list the sender uses. It merely verifies that they have a live address, and live addresses are valuable to spammers.

Second, get a good cookie control program. I use CookiePal, but there's any number of them for you to try.

Third, setup a hotmail address that you use only when you need to enter details in a website's database (websites that you don't want to hear from). Don't use that address for anything else, never check it etc. You could probably use your existing hotmail address for this as it's already a target.

Lastly, if you really must post a good email address on a website, insert some words in it to confuse the webcrawlers used by spammers i.e. myname@removethisbit.yahoo.com. The inserted words should indicate that they are to be removed by people who genuinly want to email you. If you have to post a genuine email address, then check the sites' privacy statement. If it says it won't give your details out, then fine. If it doesn't, then walk away.

While not perfect, the above should stop most of the shite that appears in your mailbox (I get about 1 spam message a month). I'm sure others will have other methods.

Blocked about 1,000 of them trying to get into the mail system at work. Thanks to my deft use of WebShield and GroupShield we got all the buggers before anyone noticed.

Heh. Go, me!

Excellent stuff. So what about if someone uses hotmail?

That's how it got in, but GroupShield prevented it moving within our Exchange organisation.

We spanked the 'colleague' who was using web-based mail. Wasn't Hotmail as they're protected by McAfee.

Yahoo then.

When that email came out McAfee hotmail said the file was clean. I didnt by that .pif extention at all. 2 Days later hotmail clamed it was a virus.

They're naughty, then. Only way there is to keep your desktop AV software bang up-to-date and configured to scan downloaded files.

:eek6:

You don't notice any slowdown on modern PCs any more. On mine, I've disabled the system scan (don't want files scans as I move them around my hard drive or play games) which cuts out the vast majority of overhead.

As long as your scanning all files as they enter your system (Internet, email, floppy disk etc) then you'll be okay. No harm in scheduling a full scan one a week, either.

Now go get clean!

I use kasperskey, which is pretty damn good.

Seems there's an upsurge in that bloody trojan.seeker lately, though as a Win2K user it doesn't work on my system.

Oh FYI, the trojan.seeker attempts to set your homepage to something else (it kindly makes a backup of your registry first though!). It's normally picked up from sites you visit.

Before I went on my hols I set up a custom recipient on my Exchange box that simlpy forwarded all inbound mail to an address I could pick up on my PDA. This addy was fwdtohmail@blahblah.com. This addy is getting spam now ffs. How the hell do they do it. This addy has never been entered anywhere on the net or even mail sent to anyone but me

Weird - I get no spam emails on my ISP account,. My hotmail account though... No one ever got the address, I only used it to set up a messenger account (now dead), and I still got spam within 1 day. How do they do that?

They have proggies to automatically check the Hotmail website for new accounts, they do the same for ICQ.

x@x.com has always been a personal favourite for wanker sites that insist on sending my mailbox more traffic than it wants.
