Is it really free? :)

The money just appears out of thin air? :p

well nothing in life is free we all know :p ......but in a sense it is....you have to pay like 1122 a year (its gona up a lot this year due to credit crisis) in tuition fees but if you cant afford that the government pays for like 900 of it

as for out of thin air....taxes i guess

Not sure why quite a lot of people are against Laddey joining the Navy, joining a service is a great idea if you want to see the world and get paid for it (I've been raised in an army environment all of my life). I would check out all three service's websites and have a look at what you would want to do within the that service (would favour navy/airforce as you'll be less in the line of fire).

I don't know anything of your life so this might be completely wrong but you seem quite lazy, especially in terms of education so trying to get GCSEs/A levels now (for the second time) will be a hard slog and they won't mean anything unless you get yourself to Uni after, which is entirely possible if you have the conviction.

Navy could be a great option for you but it's not something you can go in half arsed with, if you do it it'll be a massive commitment (currently thinking about joining the RAF myself after i've finished my MA) and you may not like the discipline (say bye bye to weed etc) so it's definately worth doing your research for.

Joining the forces is actually a good idea if you have no other prospects you want to look at. So long as you stick with it you can get a whole load of options to be trained in for no cost and after several years you can just get honourably discharged.

Not to mention seeing the world, getting your head in gear and actually deciding what to do with your life. Might as well be doing something productive while deciding. Not forgetting there will be enough cock for even you :D

I say go for it.

Otherwise some day you will realise that your 30 and the only thing you've done with your life is work and partying. It might be fun now but we all get old.

I have no intention of wasting my youth in a 8-16 job. Neither should you. And the navy sounds like an excellent place to be for a young man if you ask me. Getting to see the world and all that.

Weigh up the pro's and con's carefully.
Navy life is not always what you might expect, and not all of it out at sea. Pick up the jobs guide and really give it a good reading over, try and find a job/career you could go in for. Engineering and Mechanical are good jobs for people who like to work with their hands, and you wont necessarily have to go to sea (in case it turns out you get motion sickness).

Try to focus on a particular type of job rather than 'The Navy' and work from their. If your still keen on the idea once you've found your niche, take it further and apply. After all, you can only fail the physical once.

You mean you only get one shot at the physical?

That doesn't bother me tbh. I'll train before i go in, get moderatly fit and then let the PT take over

No, I mean if they find some reason to reject you (I.E. serious illness) reapplying is a moot point.
ANd if they reject you for being a fat-ass, you can always hit the gym and work of the lard... fatty :D

I passed the army fitness test, run a mile and a half in under 11 mins. I done it in like 9 and a few second i think.

That was nearly 4 years ago though, ive drunk alot of ale and ate many pies without jogging since then

You'll probably be okay then. The Navy's physical fitness expectations are different to that of the army, that's all I'm saying. For some reason, I don't see the Navy marching you through woodlands at 5am in your underwear. I do recall a mate once saying they have some sort of lung capacity test... although he may have been talking about the RAF (tried and failed all 3 armed forces... now works as a teacher, bless him).

If your serious about making a change in your life quit the drugs now and start training within a few months nobody (save the people who knew you) will be any the wiser of your layabout ways. It's a chance for a fresh start. Don't fuck it up.

My little brother went to join the Navy as a Weapons Artificer but unfortunately didn't complete all his training.

Once you apply, you go for your interview and they assess if you're the right sort of person. Put it this way, being in the Navy can be claustrophobic so if you wig out in enclosed spaces, it might not be for you.
If you get through the interview, they tell you what the requirements are for the fitness and call you in for assessment. Assuming you do okay with that, you join up and start 3 months basic training. My brother went to HMS Raleigh in Cornwall for his basic training and broke a bone in his foot on the second day. :)
They put him in Stonehouse which is the hospital section for 6 weeks while the bones healed. They stacked him up on potatoes and made him swim 6-8 hours a day. By the time he was recovered he was in the best shape he's ever been.

He rejoined the following intake and completed his training with a note of commendation (sort of passing with merit). He transferred to HMS Collingwood in Hampshire where he was put on fast track to qualify and be put forward for officer training.

For some reason, he decided that Navy life wasn't for him after 8 months and requested a discharge. He has some regrets about not sticking it out, but the whole experience was fantastic because he found confidence, learned how to train properly and still looks after himself now better than he did before he applied.

Laddey, if the Navy sounds interesting then you might want to think about what you want to aim for. There are literally dozens of career choices, either on ships or submarines. Not all Royal Navy operations are wartime, many of them are policing international waters like the waters off Yemen and Somalia atm.

The navy is a brilliant idea really, it's one of the few army branches where you can get real world work qualifications, and as already mentioned - you are alot safer on a boat off the coast than in the heat of battle.

If you have serious considerations of doing it, do it now before it's to late, your chances of getting in is getting slimmer every day you smoke that crap & age :p

edit: Just remembered that you can also experience all the gay questions you've been asking lately first hand.

Yeah, be a police man. But no that won't work anymore since my brother has convictions.

Be the landlord of a local pub.

Be a plasterer

Loads i guess, but navy sounds the most appealing to me. I wanna get away from Depreston and all the rifraff on it. I wanna see different countries, meet new people. Actually feel good abotu myself

grab 500 quid, fuck off to india for 4 months, meet new people, come back a much cooler person ( weed is dirt cheap too ) feel good about yourself

forget the navy

Because im thick. Im a person that uses my hands, i like to be active rather than sat at a desk.

Can get lots of qualifications for practical stuff, some with apprenticeships even. Things like engineering, construction and the like. Worth looking at if it's where you want to be going.
Did a quick search on google, Preston College have a construction department and a technology department, the tech one has some computing and some engineering parts to it, including some apprenticeships.
Good luck in whatever you choose though :)

I always wanted to try a service on a submarine personally, didnt really have a chance to go there though.
I think Navy is a good choice. I'm not sure how is the training in the UK, but judging from my own experience with IDF infantry training, I think that you need to start training a bit and getting in fitness.

I have to ask...

If he wants to accomplish something in his life how would smoking weed in india do that?

I know some people think its the same as a prison sentence. But ask yourselves this: Do you feel free in that office you go to every morning? :ninja:

My brother reckons get placed on a nuclear sub, do all your training to look after reactors and so on do your five year stint (or whatever it is) leave and join a nuclear power plant (40k+ a year) It's become so popular the Navy offers people shed loads of cash if they stay on.

really needs a seperate "special" thread to reply to you, but in one sentance instead of the required essay -

you have obviously done nothing with your life, otherwise you wouldnt have to ask :)

Travelling, sure, is a great idea. But when laddey implies he want's to stop smoking, it's not the best advice to tell him to go and smoke lots of pot. Kinda defeats the object of him making a clean start/break or whatever.

I would, too, say go travelling laddey.

I think its obvious that you havent done anything with your life if a holiday in india is what makes life worth living to you.

How about that essay now?
