Over the last few weeks I've not been receiving someones texts. We assumed it was the other persons phone. Only today I found out somebody else has tried to text me and I just simply didn't get it.

God knows how many texts I'm just not getting, but I am wondering if its my iPhone. Its a cracked 1st gen one and I'm therefore worried that I'm randomly not getting texts because of it.

So if I want to get a new phone; any advice? Hows the Blackberry Storm or perhaps Nokia E71?

I'm on 2.1. I get some texts from one person, but then I don't get other ones off them. :( Rather frustrating.

Age old fix for this.

Set your network discovery to manual, select a network that you are not on. Then search again and select your network (or just set it back to auto). You should receive any outstanding texts.

Tried sticking the SIM into another phone and seeing if the texts come through? Are you sure it's the phone ignoring random texts or a phone+network problem?

Not sure how to select manual, but by pressing another network 'automatic' unticks so I presume this is what I need to do. I repress on o2 after searching again, still not got my texts though.

Could this be an o2 problem? One of the numbers I get some texts from but not others is virgin, not sure about the other number.

Guess I can try it on a friends phone, though I'd prefer my backlog of texts not to be on there.. ;)

I do often wonder if these people (at quite a few call desks etc) really are monolithic idiots or whether they just try to fob you off at any given oppurtunity when they say things like this.

"Oh no it can't be us, it must be everyonelse that's the problem!". Really...

I dont know if this is relevant to your situation but SMS text messages are not reliable at peak times - the system drops text messages at peak times when it gets overloaded.

The infrastrucure was never built for the volumes and texts were never regarded as important so the systems not coded to save messages that it cant deliver at the time - it just dumps them and moves on.

A collegue has gotten hold of a storm and says typing on it is a lot easier than on the iphone, although i personally think the bold would be the way to go (lovely screen, wish i could upgrade my 8800 to it now)

HTC HD is supposed to be really good and i'm desperately trying to get work to buy me a SE X1 right now, tight gits. Although windows mobile is a bit of a late starter and only just beginning to work properly.

That's the one, I'd suggest selecting the network, turning the phone off & back on in the middle of that cycle though.

I've got an X1 on order from Vodafone. Proper keyboard, decent camera and the panels look ace.

Thinking about it (the phone they've given me in my new job is shite, despite the company running a mobile operator), but I'm still a bit dubious about the X1 because its WinMobile underneath. Looks lovely though. Review when you get it please?

Just out of coincidence, I mentioned at a party last night that o2 were being shitey shite for me of late - text messages not getting through to people until much later on in the day, some texts not getting through at all. Three of my mates all piped up and said "yeah, i'm having problems with my texts too, and 3G sometimes gives up the ghost". My o2 broadband has been a bit temperamental too.

I reckon o2 are having a shite patch.

I'm not suprised that txt messages are playing up for o2, i was down at their exchange in croydon the other month and was given a bit of a tour and their sms service appears to be running on servers older than Jupitus.

I'm also interested in seeing how well this phone operates.
I'm a bit torn between the X1 and the HTC Touch Pro.

I think the X1 is a tad better though...which is saying a lot since I've not been a fan of Sony Erricson phones but I suppose this is more a SE-HTC phone

Sorry folks, blame Vodafone for that one. They said it would be here Saturday, yesterday it finally turned up. Useless Stunts.

Anyway, on to the X1. I am going to try an remain as impartial as possible on this one, after all my bias is well known. However ignoring that, it is a stunning bit of kit. I've never used a Windows Mobile phone before, and after 2 years with Symbian, I'm now convinced WM is the way forwards. The UI on the X1 is fantastic. Everything's logically laid out, the touch screen makes navigation a doddle, and the virtual joystick is fantastic. You have to think about things differently than with a normal phone, but when you do it's brilliant. The only thing that wasnt immediately apprent was how to send a text to someone's business number, but I found that in the menus easily enough.

I'll do the rest bit by bit.

The panels - Great idea imo. They give you a variation of backgrounds, all with different functionality. Yet no matter which you select, you can still always get to everything important through the start menu. Only criticism is the delay in accessing them, but then I dont find myself switching that often. The fish more than makes up for that :) Haven't looked into new ones yet, I will as a matter of course. 8/10.

The camera - havent used it a huge amount and from what ive seen it doesn't measure up to the Cybershot models or the N95, but its more than useable. Certainly better than the cameras on the Walkman models. 7/10

Storage - Takes MicroSD cards (!!!) and comes with about 400 meg. Plenty of RAM though, so you don't get the annoying crashes from the earlier UIQ phones. No card supplied though, so I'll knock 1 point off for that, as I am Scottish and tight. 9/10

Multimeeja - awesome screen. The speakers aren't going wobble anyones wobbly bits but they are at least stereo. WMP has no problem with full screen video and the music player has Sony's excellent menus system from the PSP/PS3. Also has a 3.5mm jack on the phone and will charge through USB. In fact the charger is a plug with a USB socket in it! 10/10

Connectivity - has everything you could need, except possibly IR. But does anyone use that any more? 10/10, although deduct 1 if you live in 1997.

Build - After a frankly shoddy couple of N95 8Gb's the X1 is lush. It has a nice solid feel, the slide is beautifully damped and the aluminium keyboard is a joy to use. It's also a classy looking handset, much slimmer than the N95 or HTC Tytns. 10/10.

Basically it's an awesome bit of kit. I'll do more later.
