I was saveing all my pennies for Tribes 2 and that has been delayed while they sort out Frame rate issues. I need another game to tide me over till it comes out.

Needs to be/have
FPS
Intense multiplayer action
umm.....
At least 16 player support
A bit of stratagy (no quake3's or anything)
Team orientated if possible

I have (matching this description)
DF1/2
UT
HL (yes and all it's good MOD's, CS FLF and the like)
Project IGI (although doesn't have Multiplayer support.. YET).

I have just been looking at Rainbow 6 covert ops. There are a few things that i am not sure about...
Are the servers adequatly full (don't like games where you can only find 2 ppl playing at any given time)
Is it very team based (i like this type of FPS)

Does Deux Ex match up to this? I heard it was very good but is the Multiplayer good? Are the servers rich?

Also mechwarrior4 vengence Is this out in the UK (can't find it on BW release dates)

There's fuck all of any good on the PC atm, and there's fuck all any good that's going to come out very soon. If you've got yourself a DC (like all l33t people should :p) pick up Shenmue.

Ignore the Shenmue comment. Liking the DC obviously demonstrates some confusion about one's sexuality.

Basically, buy Deus Ex. If there was ever one game that threatened to kill multiplayer games dead for me, it was Deus Ex. Added bonus being a multiplayer patch in the works.

Deus Ex is a damned good game yes.

But why does liking by far and away the best gaming platform (at the moment) that is out there demonstrate a confusion about someone's sexuality?

the PC always has been the best gaming platform
and still is
i'm yet to see a console that competes

I agree with Amobea. To a point.

It depends on what games you like.
Basically, if you like beat-em-ups - get a console.

If you like any other type of game get a PC.

I my opinion (only - there are no facts here), the console games chucked out are done to a much less involving level than PC games. Metal Gear Solid (which I gather is a good game outright) has come in for mixed media attention due to its sudden confrontation with "competition" - most natably Deux Ex.

Consoles, are essentially designed for Kids. They cost less for the unit, and the games cost more, thus fitting in much better with a Childs finances. The games are accessable and *mostly* seem very short on plot. There is little time spent trying to build up much involvement, other than saying, you are <japanese soungin name> you have these stats. Kick the crap out of these multinational opponants. And that is how it has been for years. The difference of having it on a DC is that you get to kick the crap out of multi national opponants with more colourful fireballs.

I may have been a bit harsh there. I have played DC, and I did enjoy myself, for mindless fun consoles CANNOT be beaten (remember, you dont have to load anything or mess about with drivers or graphic settings or nought).

However, the depth of PC games is worth much much more to me. As nasty as FMV is nowadays, I still love Wing COmmander III, cause, although a VERY flawed game, because of its decision making processes, the plot id bring me in. I picked up WC prophecy the other day on budget, and again, there is depth there (though less so that the ealier games).

I mean, even Quake 2 managed to throw in a huge intro sequence - (which I was actually quite motivated by, dunno about anyone else, its a shame the in game pace was not as high as the intro).

Ok, I've bullshitted on enough. um, games.

I notice that CS is missing from your list? it sounds to match yoru requirements?

Yes, I agree that the PC WAS the best platfrom for games. At current though, it clearly isn't as there isn't one game that's worth noting of anything outstanding, and nor does there seem to be anything special coming out in the immediate future.

My view is that the PC is the best for gaming (just look at the hours spent on each if you have both) BUT I also think that the DC has had a bit of a purple patch recently - Shenmue, MSR, Virtual Tennis. These games are the best of their genre on any platform. It has also or soon will be blessed with Q3 and HalfLife. This makes for an impressive list of year end releases. At £150 it grabs PS2 by the nuts and swings it around until the scrotum sack rips off.

In summary: PC rocks (CS is my second job now!) but DC is quality.

Sorry, when i say HL i mean HL and all it's mods :)

I went out and bought Rainbow 6 Covert ops essentials and i am not to pleased. 3 missions (completed already) 6 training missions. Multiplayer is a bit shaby since there are only 6 maps. Although it does have a great disk with loads of info and tests and stuff about the covert operations in real life. I was pretty dissapointed with it though. The graphics are also pretty... ahem shit (in some places). The first level is in a jungle and it is basically a textured solid all around you and the textures look like they had been done in MS paint. Also the menus have half the writeing missing. I guess it is back to HMV to change it for deus ex. They have to take it back it doesn't work :).

Black and White.

As for the DC, it's really impressed me, although I'd never actually buy a console. I'm pretty much a PC man. (Which you could take to mean half-PC-half-man without being too far off the mark.)

It doesnt. PS2 has Tekken. Nuff said.

Anyway, good PC games coming out. Black and White (as ReAc said), Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem Forever (I still hold out hope on this one), and lots of others (I havent got my latest copy of PC Zone to hand).

Plus in the pipeline we have Deus Ex 2, Unreal 2, Doom 3 and Team Fortress 2.

PS2 Tekken is shit. All the launch PS2 titles are utter bollocks. Should be some good stuff soon though... *hopefully*

LOL, are we talking immediate future here?!

If we are going to consider the above, then the ONE game that I am waiting for more than any other is METAL GEAR SOLID 2!. (due in Dec 2001 I think).:)

Black and White and Return to Wolfy are both due out in early 2001. Both will be better than MGS2.

mixed blessing, gives me more time to buy a rig that'll run it. :D
Gotta admit, if Wolf lives up to the graphics (lol -stupid conparison I know) it will be great. The atmosphere from the shots looks rather nice (a use for Q3 mist at last).
As screenshots are all we have, its a marginally fairer analogy.

Counter-Strike is excellent and meets all your needs, and its free if you have halflife. Theres only 2 problems with it.

1. There are alot of "l337" 13 yearolds playing it. Now i have no problem with young players (im 18) but if youre young, please dont act like a donkey todge..

2. "H4x0R5" - people with so little to do that they cheat at an online game at 3am... Cheating is very prominent at the moment, but hopefully Punkbuster will sort that out (specially if a couple barrys servers were made REQUIRED...just as a test..go on..you know you want to;) ).

Just my 2 cents.

Splitter.

this might sound wierd....

but has anyone played Baldur's Gate?

I heard two peeps discussing it in the pub tod, and they made it sound quite cool. I hasten to add that I wouldn't know, as I do not follow that genre with as much attention as, par example, UT and fps in general.

The last time I played something even remotely like it was back when I had an amiga and was totally hooked on Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back.

I can never understand peoples fascination with Counterstrike but I think this is probably because I never played on a modem. Most of the peeps there seem to have 200+ pings (at least the last time I played), it is not as punitive a game as Q3/UT, where a modemer has no chance against an ISDN player. I think the fact that it runs on lower end hardware, has also been a factor. I can see that a lot of people will open their Christmas stockings to find new GF cards in there, and will want something to showcase it. I expect more people will move to Q3/UT post Chrimbo.

Has anyone played Alice BTW, the graphics look totally cool?

I've just bought Baldurs Gate... it sounds really cool, they seem to have incorporated all the things from AD&D... sorta like sitting around the table playing D&D with the pc being the DM...

Q3 and HL on a console, or any decent FPS for that matter don't compare AT ALL with their pc equivs.

Keyboard and mouse is the only way to go :]

Yeah

Go to firingsquad & there was a game between Thresh & Makavelli on the Dreamcast where it seemed to right royally suxx0r (actually it wasnt all that bad but it was clear that the DC was no match for the pc)
