3Dlabs Wildcat VP990 Pro 512MB Video Card

this card has 512mb of memory in it, enough to play Doom3 at full rates, but what is the difference between these cards and say a Gefore 6800 ultra that Nvidia sell to gamers as the top end card.

those are for rendering flat plastic surfaces in mega res, for showing off your CAD work

whilst the gaming cards have all kinds of dx9 stuff that makes things wet or furry or whatever you want (shaders)

I also doubt they support normal maps etc...

Don't make the mistake of thinking that workstation cards will be any good at games. They'll be ok, but way below whatever consumer card you can get for much less money. They are able to do ludicrously fast line drawing at massively oversampled rates (16x 32x AA) Which, on an enormous CRT or LCD will make it look lovely, if you're into that kind of thing.

There's a reason why no hardware sites do gaming benchmarks on these; (that I know of) it's because they suck at it :)
