Well Lou's gone down to sunny Bognor for a few days to do a few talks to kids in schools about her book and see her parents. I decided now would be a good time to network up my house. Been meaning to do it for ages and I've been able to beg or borrow all the bits I need to do the job. I just can't decide on the best way to route all the cabling and as such have been fannying about all day. So far I have:

Cleaned the toilet
Cleaned the sink
Cleaned the bath
Made the bed
Had lunch
Emptied a broom cupboard so I can drill a hole to see how many cables I can get through.
Wrench a plank off the wall of said cupboard that supported the old boiler. It was held on by 8 masonary nails and was a bastard to get off. It's left some nice holes in the wall by the way. (sorry Lou).
Drilled a hole (managed to fit three cables through by the way, nice and snug)
Emptied the dishwasher
Fixed the cat ladder on the cat's moewtropolis (cat tower). This involved jigsawing the right size bits of metal from a sheet of aluminium, drilling screw holes in it and carefully attaching it to the flimsy chipboard that is the cat ladder. Not that they care....
Fed the cats
Browsed the interwebnet. (I even tried to help out in the techy forum)

Erm. I think that's it for the most part. There's was a lot of pottering about in between all those things too. Watching the cats play, fussing the cats etc...

Now I have the excuse that it's too dark and wet to do anything outside so it'll have to wait till tomorrow. Soon it'll be too late to drill any more holes too cos of the neighbour.

Arse. :(

Women should learn this:

If you want a man to clean the cupboard, toilet, living room and outside of house, you need to tell them "we need a new cable/thingymadoo through there".

Challenge, manly, not girly cleaning, it's re-arranging and prioritising the workplace :D

I have now cleaned the inside of the fridge. It had a blocked up doo-hicky and there was a load of ice. So I hit it with a hammer. Some parts of the fridge did come away with the ice but I think it's still working. Watch this space for updates...

Another blunt instrument known as a hairdryer would of worked better, although plug it in first and turn on....still remember to point it in the direction of ice and not start hitting it with the hairdryer.

I used a hair dryer on our upright freezer and it took bloody ages. Trust me, a hammer is the way to go. You can always glue bits of the fridge back on :)

Well I finally did it. The house is now networked and fuck me if it wasn't hard work.

There's a fair bit of tidying to be done. I haven't hidden any of the cables under the carpet or anything cos it's getting late but I have routed them all pretty much where they're going to be staying.

I've been meaning to hard wire the house for ages, years in fact.

I'd pour myself a drink but since I defrosted the fridge, I put all the beer on the side and it's room temperature. Bleurgh.

Its very unsatisfying though. Chiselling out a huge slab of freezer-shaped ice is hugely satisfying, especially if you can get it out in one piece (and then put it in the sink and melt holes in it with the tap). Its the only reason I ever clean the fridge tbh.

Defrosting was a highlight of my youth :)

My Mum's huge old chest freezer needing defrosting, in I went wrapped up warm. Armed with screwdriver, hammer, chisel and various other deadly weapons. Ted sometimes came too. And there we were in Narnia battling the Ice Queen!

Was always awesome till my sister snuck up and shut the lid :twak:

I hope Ted was "wrapped" too.

Sorry :\

Gaff, you're so like me, sometimes I think you're me, or that I am you, or you're my clone, or we're cloned off the same person, and we're not each other, because you keeping posting exactly what I'm thinking. Get out my head please, thanks?

;)

Yes I was reading this thread and was going to say that nothing beats extracting a slab of ice out the bottom of the freezer without breaking it, the putting it in the sink to melt holes in it. Although, Gaff missed out the all important "take it to the bedroom to show the missus and pretend you're going to shove it under the covers against her naked body" step.

You dont get this buildup of ice on modern fridge freezers - saves a task though I used to break it out armed with nothing but a stout metal spoon n patience!

Go away for a week's holiday and leave the freezer door slightly open and it'll soon be like a Glacier in there. So I'm lead to believe.

It doesn't frost up like old freezers, but during the defrosting cycle some water can (over time) dribble down into the drip tray at the bottom which does build up over time; and as Gaff said (as I was going to say, again ) leaving the door open will generate a large slab pretty quickish.

It was kind of cool melting all the ice in the sink. I got bigger slabs out of the freezer though when Damini left it open for two days before we noticed and the whole thing had turned into a scene from Pingu.

Doesn't anyone defrost the easy way any more?

  • Eat all stuff in freezer
  • Turn freezer off for a day

It also gives you a handy excuse to ninja all the ice cream :)
