As things stand though, we give out TOO MUCH money via state benefits. People take the piss and see no incentive to work. And why would they? Especially people that have "bad backs" (haha easiest way to fake DLA claims is with that). They get their income support/incapacity. DLA Care, DLA Mobility(including possibly a free new car every 2-3yrs), their rent and their council tax. Often I see people in the excess of 1.5k a month in benefits. Makes me wonder why I struggle to get along with what I earn when they earn near enough the same by sitting on their arse.
Thats perfectly true for some people (scroungers, spongers, fraudsters, and so on). There are plenty of people out there with real genuine needs. I agree the benefits administration is a joke here in the UK but in all honesty, it must be a real nightmare to run. You need a backbones of rules and procedures, and each case needs to be considered separately and on its relative merits. But as I have mentioned before there's a real lack of common sense or insight. Those who have a genuine need for benefit are quizzed to the nth degree to justify why they should continue to receive benefit; while others who are milking the system for what they can get seem to get away scott free.
I think there are a number of European countries who have social security infrastructure which is run a hell of a lot better. We could do a lot worse than research how such systems work, and undertake a feasability analysis as to whether such systems could work over here. Maybe its a futile exercise, because so many people are just too lazy to help themselves and prefer instead to be spoonfed by the state. Such ambivalent cultural institutionalisation is sadly endemic in British working class society. The minority tars the brush of the majority.
