Yeah I was well aware that almost every teenager and his dog wants to be in the games industry, and that's why I went for the degree I did (Games Design) which has it's positives and negatives. I'm a jack of all trades (animate, texture, model, light, post production) yet not specialist in any. The course was fairly new and there weren't that many that graduated this year, however there is a huge wad of people now on the course behind me, so i'm kind of racing against time.

Only thing I can do at the mo is work on my portfolio and when Half-Life 2 is released I hope to do some mod work...raising my profile a bit and suchlike.

One thing that was suggested to us actually is freelance animation as apparantly it's great for cv's and getting 'around a bit'. Certainly something i'm looking into.

I'm pissed about jobs and I haven't even started yet. Since graduating i've applied for hundreds of jobs, initially as a 3D artist at any games company as that's what my degree was in. They replied, mostly requiring 2 years experience (which I can't get because seemingly nobody hires without it).

Now i'm applying for local office monkey 9-5 type jobs to gain some cash whilst I work on my portfolio, again loads of applications and only one reply. Nobody fucking even gives you the time of day let alone the decency of a reply saying thanks but no thanks. I'm hammering out applications anywhere and everywhere that I am capable of doing the job...and nothing :(

One of the many pitfalls about UNI is that people dont realise that employers want people with experiance.. i know alot of UNI guys who graduated like 4-5 years ago.. there working in factorys packing peas.. thet spent about 2-3 years at UNI all i can say is what a fucking waste.

Keep at it though mate im pretty sure most of us have been where you are right now sucks when they dont reply to apps

I tend to agree - academic qualifications are only really of use for professions that explicitly demand them, like electricians, doctors, scientists, etc.

I did 2 years on a BTEC ND, passed, then did another 2 years on a HND - I got within 2-3 months of my final exams and quit because it was getting in the way of work I was doing at a local company. I was only on about £30 a day for the work, and doing stupid long hours, but it was a start. That was in 1994, it took me until 1999 before I became self-sufficient, and another year after that to save up for my house. Now I'm doing fine, but it was hard work getting here.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you want something hard enough, you'll find a way to get it. It just might not arrive quite in the fashion you expected (I mostly want to work on documentary stuff, but sport takes up more than half of what I do - I'm not bothered, Sport will always be on telly, its recession-proof).

Oh, and those qualifications? Not one person since I quit has asked what qualifications I have.

When you get to over 21 most employers dont give a crap about what exam results or qualifications you have.. its more about communication skills/experiance comptency based questions are a complete nightmare i hate them damn things.

I'm in the final year of my CS degree which fortunately included a placement year, so when I start job hunting I'll have a degree (hopefully :\) and a years worth of experience. With any luck that'll sort me out. We'll see.

That all depends on what work you go for.

Accountants, Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers...most "professional" careers will *always* want to know your qualifications.

Tesco aint bad to work for.. if you can get high up which is actually what there aiming for staff to do you can be minted.

I worked there for about 2 years was nice atmosphere etc no back stabbing everyone got on and had a laugh.. you were always busy for the shift you worked never stood about doing nothing, although it may not seem it thats what you want in a job.. ive done office jobs and i can say they are boring as hell id much rather be on my feet working constantly makes the day go faster.

Shortest job: 7 weeks in McDonalds. I was desperate for money that summer...

Currently I'm doing the same as Nath (though I'm clearly a year behind as I'm 4 months into my placement year). Coming out of uni with a full year of professional experience seems like a good plan to me... especially if the same company were to take me back on again and save me the faff of actually looking for a job.

With grammar and punctuation like that you wouldn't get a job from me.

Sweet, sweet irony. :)

Earlier in the week someone at work emailed me a document that had been rejected by a customer on account of "spelling and grammatical errors". He asked me if I could look at it, and said - quote - "this document was originaly due lst Tuesday so it is imbarisen if we can not get it to them today". Seriously.

But back on topic - shortest time I've been at a job was 1 hour, of which about 30 minutes was spent waiting around for my Dad to come and pick me up. To be fair it was an agency job at Bowyers, packing sausages or somesuch (I hated it so much; the smell, the thick people that worked there that I didn't even find out everything I was going to be doing). I think agencies basically expect a massive amount of no-shows and quitters, they weren't in the least bit surprised or annoyed when I said I was jacking it in.

By contrast I have been at my current job for over 4 years now. Unfortunately I'm at the stage where I am not really doing anything new and am just going through the motions every day. :(

Hmm how old are you?

Anyone who doesn't agree with you is "retarded". You're the one who comes across like a petulant child full of potty talk.

If you can't engage in debate then go play with your Fisher Price toys. I'm also sick of your bullshit on these forums - if 95% of people are (whateveryouflamedthemas) then why not fuck off?

Nothing quite like a self-modding community :)

On topic, shortest time I have worked in any single job would be when temping, and never as a result of quitting or being sacked...

Right now, I have a vacancy on my team (again) for a shift covering 1st line support person, dealing with financial market data queries for a leading provider of exchange and contributed financial price data, based in London. It's kinda a starting position here with on the job training and I'm looking for a reliable, committed individual with a good level of professionalism dealing with customers.

If you might be interested, drop me a PM :)

Ah but you see retaada, like in most other environments, the internet has its own particular food chain. At the top you have the cognoscenti and the ***** - no natural predators and have the choice of many juicy victims further down. A bit further down you get to the pedants, still got plenty to eat thanks to the muppets a bit further down, but shouldn't really mess with anyone further up for fear of getting torn apart. Then of course you have your common or garden retard. Thanks to increased internet availibility the ranks of retards are swelling, keeping everyone further up nice and fed.

However, recently there has become a new grouping below the retards - the people who put their MMORPG exploits in their internet forum signatures.

In short, you're in no fucking position to pity anyone. Cock.

My shortest job was two days, working at beefeater over christmas and new years getting paid triple and double time. Other than that Ive done the usual young'in jobs such as delivery and shop jobs.

Now at uni doing Computer Science (after a year of mobile communication systems) and although i'd like to use it in my job when I graduate I also do volunteer work for the union setting up club nights and gigs which is now starting to lead onto some paid work doing gigs so hopefully I'll go into that profession (i'm doing lights for beta band this week if anyones familar with them).

Do get to do cool things tho like play with mixing desks, lighting desks and fix intelligent lights :)

Oh and lots of this :drink:

Did 1 day working at a salad packing factory once for an agency during a Uni holiday. Never again. That's the only job I've had besides my current one where I've been for 10 years now :(

I really need to find a new job (but I doubt your vacancy pays enough Jup :p )
