Yeah it's zoning, not really zen. I get he same kind of thing playing quake ... I can try as hard as I like and get nowhere, then get mad and stop thinking about the game - just play. I still suck but at least I don't remember how badly.
Apparently, the human brain tries to be as lazy as possible; to automate/streamline things as much as it can, supposedly for the "fight or flight" mechanism.

I have such a bloody piss pin number anyway, so forget remembering it (See what i did there?).

And after having some Ed Psychologist test me. I got told i could remember faces, places and how damn near draw a map from memory. However i can't even begin to remember basic sequences.

This used to happen to me when I was cycling lots. I never did competitions etc, but I'd find sometimes that I'd be riding down a nice big A-road in the country, getting really tired, and I'd just find the right cadence and suddenly for the next 10 minutes my body would seem to switch off all the pain from my thighs, and find extra energy. It didn't matter which way the wind was blowing.

I remember really enjoying those moments, you really felt like you'd achieved something.

Do you find you end up with some really shit tune in your head when this happens? I find the best sign I'm in the zone whilst cycling is that I've got some cheesy song from ten years ago stuck in my head.

such a spiritual thread peeps. A more common occurance of wot yer all talking about it typing, see? Im not looking at what im doing, im just thinkin words and watchin chimps drink their own piss while afk-trolling...yeah well. Close enough, but youv typed so much that your finger know what to do.

Good example of this was when i was in belgium at a friends house, a computer i was using there had a euro keyboard but with a UK charset so the pictures didnt line up with what you got. Invariably it took me ages to type if i looked and tried to remember where certain keys should be but once id stopped looking or noticing then it was just like normal, it didnt matter that pressing v gave you a b :)

I think there's two different things being talked about here, the mental bit of the not having to think about complex things, and then the automatic accomplishment of a simple task. I think the second one can be referred to as muscle memory. I could be wrong though.

I only remember doing something like this once. Was hanging about a friends house and he had to go off somewhere for about half an hour. So i got bored and picked up the phone and dialled in a number, not from memory, just one that seemed to be being typed in automatically. Turned out i'd just dialled the phone number of another mate that I hadnt rung in 6 years. Really sucky thing is that he was out, he'd left his answer machine on, so when i tried to dial it later I couldnt remember it :(
