More excuses for insane and utterly predictable budget overuns.
Unexpected soft ground and the absolute fucking classic of all time..

"the further additional costs of it being designed to run at even higher speeds than other comparable rail projects”.

How did he keep his face straight with that one?

HS2 'could go £30bn over budget'

Where did you get "soft ground" from?
You really do just make up your own incorrect interpretation of things.

You do it all the time.

It says poor ground conditions..I'll take that as too soft rather than too hard for HS rail.

No one wants it.

Dead duck, anywhere outside of London and the commuter belt isnt dense enough to make rail appealing.

I cant believe stopping it short is even on the table.
That completely destroys the entire reason the thing was sold to us in the first place.
The attention has been slowly moving on to 'freeing up space'.

Its going to end up normal speed..stopping at the edge of London and not going past Birmingham.

Holy fuck ..considering not taking it to central London...what a fucking joke, thats 90% of its appeal, a high speed train bang in the middle of our capital city.

Tory vanity project.

Beeching was a Tory too - and if we'd continued to have all of the lines he'd taken out then we'd have a better local transport system more in line with environmental targets.

Locals kicked up a massive fuss, but cars = win for those days.

I'm guessing that HS2 probably won't stop there if they only have 46 passengers a year?

I'm guessing half of them got off at the wrong stop.

You vote and support it.

What gives you the impression they won't do the same with all that lovely money we get back from the EU?

One thing is for sure, Boris will be very comfortable when he stands down.

Hs2 works out at 307m a mile.

I makes me shudder to think of the biilions going in the back pockets of the boys club, consultants, media impact agencies and the festering heaps of pointless middle class jobs.

300m a mile...jesus fucking lord.

And you just know stuff like that'll be the first thing to go when the shit hits the fan and they realise they can't just keep adding to the budget infinitely.

Trashing important natural environment (tbh, I don't really care too much about compulsory purchase - moving people, whilst traumatic, is necessary if the business case is good enough) to make way for human wants shouldn't be a goer at all. If that means cost increase, then that should be the outcome.

Apart from much stronger laws being needed, we absolutely need a cultural change where we as a society value these things more than the economic case.

But I can't see that ever happening. Look at the hatred we pour on environmental campaigners. In the rest of the world environmental campaigners are getting murdered at a ridiculous rate. (Funnily enough, oil and farming execs don't get shot or butchered). As a species, we aren't evolved to give a fuck. Only those who've made the intellectual realisation understand the importance - and even then, it's not something that's going to grow naturally in the population - even their own kids need to come to that intellectual realisation themselves.

So we're fucked.

Cancelling HS2 would be nowhere near as detrimental to the UK as postponing the 3rd runway at Heathrow.
