Johnny Depp - 6
Sean Penn - 3 (cringeworthy ham acting)
Brad Pitt - 7
Denzel Washington - 7
Tom Hanks - 8 (used to hate him, but his more modern films have been nothing short of stunning - Saving Private Ryan & Green Mile are perfect examples)
Jimmy Stewart - 6
Russell Crowe - 6 (liked him in Gladiator and the Insider, but nowt else)
Marlon Brando - 4 (Great in the Godfather, but utter toilet for most of the other stuff he's done)
Robert De Niro - 10 (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Heat, Awakenings)
Edward Norton - 6
Al Pacino - 10 (Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, Scent of a Woman, Carlito's Way (Penn does his best to fvck this up), Heat, Any Given Sunday - The man's a genius)
Kevin Spacey - 9

There's a fvck load of actors missing from this list, but at least it features my two favourite actors in De Niro and Pacino. Those guys just utterly command the movies they're in. As someone mentions though, De Niro is kinda on the toilet film path atm, and I was pretty shocked to see him alongside Eddie Murphy in a film (can't remember the name). I mean FFS!

ok new list

Nicolas Cage 9 - fantastic in face off, but was best in that one scene in 8mm where he phones the girls mother for permission to punish her daughters killer.
Mark Wahlberg 6 - still not sure about this guy
Bruce Willis 8 - everybody loves die hard
Vinnie Jones 10 - he's British, he's hard, he's funny
Hugh Jackman 8 - too tall to be wolverine but I think he pulled it off well
Ewan McGreggor 8 - its always good to see some British talent his solo fight with Darth Maul was the only decent part of phantom Menace.
Vin Diesel 9 - the voice of the Iron giant, the dogs cogs in pitch black
Jet Li 8 - who cares about his acting, he knows kung foo
Chow Yun Fat 10 - apparantly one of the nicest people to work with which makes a change from all these big headed holywood hot shots, was absolutely brilliant in the replacement killers
Samuel L Jackson 8 - the actor that says bad ass motherfucker on it. Brilliant in unbreakable.
The Rock (for comedy value) ? - I daren't I really daren't

well the thing is I don't usually go to the extreme and award 10 or 1 because they have to be perfection of crappness for that, I give our Vinnie 10 because so far every film I've seen him in has impressed me not necassarily for his acting ability but just because he is the daddy, if he were American however he would not be the daddy, more like the cousin you never speak to.

Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson have made bad films in the run up to the death of their careers.
And who was slagging off what dreams may come, I don't care what those stuck up critics say I liked it. The reason they didn't like it was because it required intelligence to understand the plot, I was alright I had a girlfriend at the time to explain it to me.

I will readily slag off What Dreams May Come, not due to the acting but because it was the most nauseous Christian propoganda horrific pious wank I've ever had to endure.

Quite pretty effects though.

Brad Pitt was excellent in Ocean's Eleven and Kalifornia, the latter of which you can hardly accuse him of being a "prettyboy" in. :)

For the sheer unadulteraded joy of it all, I have listed my favourite actors. 1 being the best, 10 being pretty darn good. All imo, of course. I've highlighted certain films which mean something to me or demonstrate the characteristics I mention. Not necessarily their most popular films
  • 1 - Al Pacino - The absolute daddy. A hugely powerful actor with an intense natural charisma that just draws you in. Helped by the fact he has a huge range. Highlights: Godfather (obviously), Glengarry Glen Ross, Devil's Advocate (only for the wonderful over-the-top rant at the end), Scarface.

2 - Robert De Niro - Also a powerul, charismatic actor with a huge range. Lets himself down by seemingly saying 'yes' to every film offer he gets which tends to water down his 'power' over time. Still fantastic, though. Highlights: Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Raging Bull (incredible physical transformation), Cape Fear (superb improvised scene with the young Juliette Lewis)

3 - Kevin Spacey - Again, that charisma and range. Just look at the two characters he plays in The Usual Suspects and LA Confidental. In one he's so small, hunched and always in the background. The other, tall, confident and demands attention. ("Jack's back!") He plays both with utter conviction. Has an incredible subtlety to him and able to underplay everything yet still get across an incredible wealth of emotion and meaning. Highlights: Two previously mentioned, Glengarry Glen Ross, Looking For Richard (with Al Pacino)

4 - Gary Oldman - Hot mamma! Makes me proud to be British. Always turns in a good villian in unoriginal American flicks. Can 'ham' superbly (Leon, Fifth Element) Highlights: Previously mentioned, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead (with Tim Roth), True Romance

5 - Anthony Hopkins - They don't make actors this intense anymore. The man frightens me because of the sheer talent and intelligence he possesses. He played Picasso a few years ago, but I find Hopkins to be a far more interesting person than the genius painter. Highlights: Silence of the Lambs, King Lear

6 - Jack Nicholson - A more 'vibrant' actor than Pacino and De Niro, with perhaps less subtlety but just as much (if not more) charisma and charm. Just look at One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, for Christ's sake!

7 - Dustin Hoffman - Man! Old school quality! Not seen much of him recently but another weighty actor. Highlights: Death Of A Salesman, Rainman, Hook (come on... he was just having so much hammy fun!)

8 - Edward Norton - Something tells me we haven't seen the best of this (relatively) young fella. He's gradually fostering the sort of range and power that will one day make him great. Highlights: Malcolm X, Fight Club

9 - Johnny Depp - Pretty boy with a huge talent. Expert at the intense, brooding stare and also has a wonderful comic ability. Highlights: Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Donnie Brasco.

10 - Nicholas Cage - Always over the top, even when he's under-playing. In Con Air he never once changed his facial expression, in Raising Arizona he was hilarious. I always get the sense that there's a huge joke to everything he does which only he understands. A 'gimmicky' actor, but he makes it work. Highlights: Previously mentioned, Face/Off
Phew. I need to rest now. This long rant is exactly the reason I didn't post in here before. :/

Also, if you appreciate fine acting, get Glengarry Glen Ross out on the format of your choice.

The arse of some nubile blonde, whose arse cheeks mime in time to the dialogue.

That's my format of choice.

And Oscar worthy too!

I'm too tired Sar, otherwise you'd hear a venomous attack on the shite that is What Dreams May Come. Can we just cut to the chase and agree I'm right?

Work sucks. Today I was mostly a baker.

D'yer know.... after I wrote that I wondered why there were no female actresses in there and I reached the following conclusion.

*ahem*

I admire power, versatility and charisma in an actor/actress above everything else. I can't think of any actress that has displayed these qualities. Perhaps peeps like Judy Dench, but she doesn't kick me in the nuts like Pacino and De Niro.

Nothing against females actors but I'm just not impressed by them. It could well be because of the type of roles given to actresses, or the way women are portryed in cinema, I dunno. Sorry, ladies. No offence.

*shrug*

Jodie Foster is probably my fave actress - I've NEVER seen her act badly, even as a kid :D

Next Angelina Jolie - yes she has great tits and amazing lips, but thankfully they're backed up by one hell of an actress.

Followed by: Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Halle Berry.

no

why do you hate it so much, it was a nice original film, if it had been done before it was in a film I'd never seen. People bitch on about unoriginality but when something different comes out they don't like it because its different.
It annoys me when people watch a film as a critic, I don't know about anybody else but when I watch a film for the 2 or so hours it takes reality goes on hold and everything I see and hear is real until sometime after the credits roll, the longer that lasts the better the film, thats how I judge films. Sad I know but Im a wannabe writer with a imagination of a 7 year old.
