I thought this would be an interesting topic to look at.

Firstly, I discovered something I wasn't aware of originally. Most own brand food that a store will offer is made by the same people who make the branded and more expensive variants of this food. The difference is often tiny, possibly a few ingredients or more of a particular ingredient used.

Being the sophisticated till fag that I am, I then observed differences in people's buying habits every week. One couple spent about £7.00 on food. They buy the basics of everything (13p beans, 14p pears in fruit sauce, 17p chopped tomatoes in a tin etc. etc.). Other people were buying the same amount of food roughly but often there costs would pan out to £10.00 - £30.00 on the same foods but branded labels and so on.

So the real question is, do you buy branded stuff or will you go for the own brand? In some cases, the own brand stuff tastes better to me. Is it the same for you?

Certain things we don't mind here, but there's things like butter/rice/pasta we allways go for certain things, as we're use to cooking with it.

We tried going from a regular rice to a irregular rice. Ended up binning the rice the day after, as it sucked (cooked same way etc)

Sometimes it's better to spend a little more on what you know is good, but then there's no real problem buying their own crap. (Granted, we never usually do here. Other than juice o_o)

Everyday freezer shit i get whatever is on offer. For my ingredients i buy what i know, be it a particular brand, store brand or from a specialist (butcher, farm shop, grocers etc) I cook more home made meals than freezer shit. Supermarket spend is probably around £100 a month, total food spend probably £250 odd for the two of us.

Only really certain items, unless you are proper on the scrounge.

I think of quality food to be very important and would prefer to save money elsewhere. If there really is no discernable difference then would buy the own brand stuff. I don't by it because of the brand more to be sure its come from a higher quality source / process. However subconsciously I am probably put off the 'farm stores' stuff with crap packaging!

i spend about £25.
my staff discount card at sainsburys got cancelled for no reason so it would usually be less
and i often buy fast food/takeaway in a week
lunch at sainsburys when im working
i usually buy lunch up at uni when im there

all probably adds up to £50+ a week on food.

could do it for less but ive just got my student loan
so what harm can a curry or two do eh?

:)

Oh. I never posted a price =D

Well, since it's me and parent who live here.. Maybe £40 a week on food? Not even that. We basically live on bread/ham/cheese etc (*Waits for nationality insult*) so it's easier. Becomes more when sister is here on weekends.

Hard to put a cost on it, as Gamah has said the expense comes when buying meat and perishables.

By the time I've bought some steak mince, sirloin steaks, chicken breasts and a beef joint for Sunday it adds up to about £30-40 pound per week on meats alone.

Add into that fresh fruit & salad bought every 2-3 days, Milk, Bread and cakey treats I reckon we spend about £70-80 pound a week.

However sometimes I can go shopping and spend £100 pound plus and end up with a trolley full of absolute crap. I find shopping regularly and getting less makes more sense.

We eat alot of meals for our dinner, Spag Bol, Lasagne, Fajitas, Curries, Shepherds Pie. All served with salad and relevant sides. It is alot easy to plan food for a 2-3 day period. It is also amazing at how many times you will eat the same food just because you cannot be arsed to make something else.

30-35/week

Meat is the expensive stuff.

Aye - I think even if I had to live on a very tight food budget i'd have to get some expensive meat in there somewhere. How anyone can be a veggie is beyond me.

I can spend anything from £50 to £5. Meat is as everyone has been saying very expensive, but if you find a good offer it work's out pretty cheap.

It usually depands on how i'm feeling.

Food shopping is as cheap as you make it. If your lazy and buy ready made in the oven food (as in pizzas/chips/chicken nuggets - that kinda thing) your going to obviously spend more than buying stuff you actually need to make into a meal.

Roommate and I got a food budget of ~~220£ a month. 50 of those goes to buy meat from a farm. Then we spend around 140£ everytime we hit payday for one big shopping spree to fill the kitchen. And the left overs are for milk/bread needed for the rest of the month. Or a bottle of morgan if nothing else is needed.

We spend btw 50 to 80 quid on food shopping a week, plus one meal out at the weekend for 30-50 pounds if we can't be arsed to cook ( that happens a lot !)

do you realise frozen vegetables are more nutritious (and cheaper) than most fresh stuff you buy in the shop?

they are usually frozen within 2 hours of being picked, as opposed to the fresh stuff which is picked, had fuck knows what done to it and then travelled miles to the shop.

it tastes fresh sure, kinda like mud? maybe you cooked it too long. you shouldnt boil it too long else it loses all the nutrients. i do it just enough so its defrosted and warm, then its still some crunchy mother fucking veg.

We spend quite a bit more than we should due to the fact we eat Gi most of the time, which calls for fresh stuff and a lot of chicken etc.

Most of the stuff for the GI diet is on the more expensive scale.

How the heck can people spend that much. I mean, apart from buying ben&jerry tubs, high price cheese and alcohol, i couldn't get to those figures.

Bread(1-2e/week), butter(for two weeks atleast, less then e), bread topping(same as butter, around 1.5e/week).

More long lasting even:
Some macaroni(3 bags/e) and eggs(10/e) and forzen veggies(2 bags/e).

And that's about it.

Guess you need cash to use it without such care.
