According to this programme I watched tonight, settee / serviette / toilet / lounge are all "common" - in the derogatory sense.

They reckon they can tell what class you're from the moment you open your mouth, let alone what job you do, what job your father does, how much money you earn, where you live, whether you have a second home in the country, whether you have servants, whether you live so near to work you can walk it from your weekday house, whether you shoot grouse, whether you play polo, etc etc

There was some amusing talk about names. What are "upper class" or "toff" names ?

Marmaduke
Upton
Tarquin
Sebastian
Peregrine
Quentin
Hugo
Milo
Giles
Rupert
Syngeon
Charles
Jasper
Claude
Forbes

Arabella
Bridget
Abigail
Olivia
Gertrude
Camilla
Davina
Jemima
Petunia
Grace
Alice
Isabella
Harriet
Stella

Apparently if you're called after a place, you're common as muck, Chelsea, Mercedes, Porsche, and so on. Likewise, names that end abruptly are also chavvy - Jade, Wayne, Kylie, Keira, Jack, Pete, Dave, Alf, Sue, etc etc

Most amusing

Aye. If anyone introduced themselves to you as Tarquin, would be a hard job keeping a straight face

If there are in fact people who determine your class by what you say, they are lower by default by trying to seperate people in that fashion. Personally, I don't give a shit what people describe them by, that doesn't class you unless you're a shallow morally deficiant human being who is willing to view someone as 'lesser' just because they name something differently to your high and mighty self. That programme is bollocks mate; anyone who feels the need to pidgen hole people like that is a socially inadequate human being with some sort of a superiority complex which I'd hazard a guess at saying they got because they were born with money. There are some seriously fucking stupid people out there with money. Just look at the waste of space jade goody. Nuff said. That said though,

Sofa
Kitchen roll!
Toilet
Sitting room.

Agreed, but thats what makes the whole expostulation of class in Britain humourous.

Its full of so many contradictions, illogicalities and downright stupidity that these days the entire concept of class is obsolete, and should be consigned the way of the Dodo.

Skithus is the same as Paskahuussi in Finland. We Scandic people, so eloquent in our speech when we get "tipsy".

Haha yes. :p So... huussi means house in finnish? That's got to be one of the few words that almost sounds alike then!

It's a "slang" word really, house is talo, but huussi is a slang word from the swedish word of "hus" really.

But it isn't used in anything else then the crapper.

Heh, never really thought of it like that, but i guess that could be the etymology behind it.

Ofcourse our slang words come, especially in some areas, from swedish words from the swedish rule times. But using house only for the crapper, mighty fine pwning, old century style.
