The strongest emotion this entire affair has generated in my mind is "Shit happens". I'm still trying to figure out why I should care about two people I don't know getting kidnapped and murdered. I'm not being deliberately controversial, and im not trying incite the Daily Mail readers into a blind fury. This sort of shit happens all the time all over the world. It sucks yeah, but like I said, Shit Happens. Can we have something else on the news now please?

You should care what happens to your fellow human being. Its all about being considerate and responsible for the well being of the society we live in. It is a general respect for your environment. If you dont take care of that, it wont take care of you!

If you don't care about people you dont know, then you can easily cause harm to them by your actions which is socially irresponsible and reckless. A lot of things that people do have an effect on people they do not know.

By all means do whatever you want to if you can live with the consequences and it has no effect on other people...

It is not only for what we do that we are held responsible, but also for what we do not do.

While sad this is still nothing new, just the media coverage got to silly levels to sell news papers etc. An example comes from the News of The World which called it

The end of innocence

FFS give it a break.

I shall take your point and file it under "wishy washy goodwill to all men hippy crap".

Maybe it's simply the fact that two people in the grand scheme of things don't really matter that much. Without getting into a "you can't put a price on a human life" argument, can anyone give me a reasonable explanation why the abduction of two children makes headline news for 2 weeks solid, yet wholesale massacres of thousands of people get maybe 30 seconds, at most?

Actually, I can answer it myself. It's because the media projects what people want to see. And whilst we as a country don't give a shit about what happens elsewhere (not that we're alone in that respect), we love to throw on our collective sackcloth and ashes whenever something mildly upsetting occurs within our own borders.

But it certainly has fuck all to do with caring for your fellow man.

I agree with you entirely that the media are over reporting this event...and yes they are reporting it Ad Nauseum and could report on other events going on around us...

I do think you should care that people get murdered/assaulted/raped and whatever else...in this country or anywhere else for that matter

I think most people cared about it when they initially heard, but after having it shoved down your throat by the media for 2 weeks you kinda lose that feeling and just want to hear about something else for a change.
Yes it's all very sad and I hope it never actually happens to anyone but like bodhi says "shit happens" and I personally don't want to constantly hear about it.

I think that unless any of you have children of your own then you cannot fully understand the finality off it all. Only when you have children, and only then can you really truely even begin to understand.

I agree that the news is extreme in its coverage. I cant get near the TV at the moment as Mrs Grandadwrinkle feels the need to watch it over and over and over.

My poor LOTR dvd sits and gathers dust for yet another night.

Too true.

A few years ago, I probably wouldnt have been too bothered, sad perhaps for the girls, but hey-ho.

But now, with two girls of my own, I cant bare to imagine what those poor parents must have been going through. I would be absolutley devastated if anything like this happened to my family.

As for the punishment of the two abducters, we had a discussion at work about this, and some said that two wrongs dont make a right, or that they wernt sure if they could physically harm another human, no matter what they did. But I can honestly say, if anyone ever harmed either of my daughters, I would have no qualms about ripping them to shreds.

Yeah having kids of your own changes your view. I remember being very upset about the Bulger murder too. Sad world we live in where people kill children for their kicks.

What on earth made these people do this ? I dont suppose anyone will ever really know :(
I remember that Jamie Bulger murder too, it was very disturbing for a lot of people I remember. I dont know whether that was because of the media coverage or despite it. I remember at the time at work we was turning the radio off at news times because Radio 1's coverage was so horrible.

AMEN!.

Maybe we should have a poll - if the perp is caught, how long do you think he will last in jail until he is wasted by the other inmates.

If it had been one of my kids, he wouldnt reach jail.

Always hard when something like this happens. I don't have children of my own, so don't have the emotional response like some of you, but I would still happily spend an hour with tthe bastards, in a small room.

Then the police can have whats left.

People like that should be taken out of the gene pool.

Not that he's been charged with...
There was a documentary on about him recently. Allegedly he raped his daughters 10 year old friend at his house years ago, amongst other things.

News coverage aside and all the other moans...

I really do feel for the parents. I've seen what losing a child does to people.

Err I live in this tiny little town in Northern Ireland with a maypole thing in the middle, and stuck at the bottom is a picture of the two girls with bunches of flowers below.

WTF?

Obviously no one here knew them, and had this been an open-shut case lasting a couple of days then no one would have bothered with such a 'shrine' - hell, tragic abductions / murders like this happen all over the world on a daily (hourly??) basis.

F'ing media overexposure bollocks. Even my mother thought it was tasteless. :/
