Lo, ive just (2days ago) ordered adsl from BtO. Install £75, £40 a month on a 12 month contract, now im gonna use this probably mainly for gaming. I can cancel my order netime b4 installation, but if i went ahead with the install, BUT didt like my pings, pl etc, am i allowed to cancel my BT subscription, and then subscribe to Nildram/Jolt...the more i write the more im thinking no, neways can i, or should i cancel and pay the extra tenner a week and go with Nildram, cos if i pay this money for a connect that is worse than isdn for gaming, im not gonna be a happy bunny.

Ive got ntl cable which is 25 quid a month,i get pings of around 30 on CS,i have bt adsl at work and the ping is not much worse roughly around 40-50 on CS.I had a shitload of probs wid me cable which took them 2 months to sort out, altho since the install of a new box its hunky-dorey and i cant complain.I think once u have had it installed by BT u have 2 honour the contract,im quite sure there aint a cooling off period.Some1 in these forums works for BT and im sure he will answer yr question matey!!

Normally the contract has a 5 day cancel period, though obviously, the best people to ask this would be BT.

I don't have ADSL myself (1meg cable modem on 21th January :D), but from what I have heard of it, the extra £10/month is well worthwhile.

Well, our resident l33t spamm0r Summo went for the Nildram/Jolt deal over the BTO deal, and I haven't heard a bad word from him. 3 of my clanmates had BTO fitted, and have had large periods of downtime, between 1 and 3 weeks after install before they had service.

Hello! :D

Itchy's right, I chose Nildram over BT after reading the huge, HUGE number of 'BT suck c0cks' posts all over the Internet. They've had a bad rep from day one and it seems clear that the BT network is designed for Joe Browser to book airline tickets marginaly faster than normal. Nildram had a bad patch a while back, but have recovered well it seems, and are far more tailored towards gamers.

I've only had Nildram ADSL (ordered through Jolt) for 9 days now so I can't give you a rock solid assesment, but it has always been there with steady, low pings and fast downloads. So far I'd recommend them to anyone.

If I were you I'd play it safe. Cancel that BT order and go with Nildram. As it's a BT engineer which install s it you might still be able to keep your original installation date with a bit of haggling, but I doubt it.

OK - lemmie go against the grain here - I have had BTo ADSL for a good 6 months now.

They did go through a rough patch a while with some bad pl for a week or so, and they have had a lot of bad press about poor customer service.

However they have turned it around brilliantly. They have upgraded thier HG's (home gateways) and pl is no longer an issue. I generally ping around 30-40 on jolt and 40-50 on BW. As for customer service - tech support is fast, efficent, and local rate. Billing is also handled well online, with a phone number to ring if you mess up.

BTW - I am not -

Joe Browser to book airline tickets marginaly faster than normal
I have used the net since Mosaic was around and I have been through at least 10 ISPs (including AOL, Compuserve, Demon, Pipex, even RedHotAnt) since then. I (before getting made redundant) work as a web developer and my net connection is my lifeline - if it goes down then I am royally fucked.

If your after ADSL info then this site and its forums are the muts nuts - http://www.adslguide.org.uk

I must agree, i got BtO, and i am well pleased with it. It did have a rough time, but i agree with Jas, that they have turned around the service 10-fold. I rarely experience packet loss, and usually i get 25 ping (dos) and 35(UT) . I only ever have one problem. Sometimes the little modem thing in the tray goes yellow and cuts off my connection :)() , i aint got a clue how to stop it, and i dont know why it does it! I heard that , when i use KaZaA , it has a conflict with my mobo, which sends too much data to the modem and cuts it off.

But apart from that, its great :D

I'll go with Jas, Psy1 & Fusy... I've had BTO for around 5 months now... around Oct / Nov last year they had loads & loads of problems, but since then they've been as good as gold... I can't fault the pings / download speeds I've been getting for the past couple of months...

Ooh! Looks like BTO have sorted their act out. Good on 'em.

I retract my previous negative comment but wish to add

BTO Will never be good.

I dunno who said they had excellent customer service but thats a load of toss.
You phone the BT Wanks up and you have to sit through around 4000 instructions on what buttons to press to get to the right place.

When you finally do get through their fuckin lines are shit. Bastards.

Also, they may have sorted out their act but www.adslguide.org - go to the compare screen and compare BTO, Freedom 2 Surf, Pipex, Nildram and Eclipse-Computers.

Then you will see exactly where BTO Stands (in the shitter)

i have had Zen ADSL for about 4 months and, although it has had some problems, these weren't their fault (care to remember when BT "lost" half of it's IP backbone?). they recently upgraded their central pipe from 34mbps to 155mbps and it is steady as a rock. my computer uptime seems to be the limiting factor when it comes to staying connected, as (9 times out of 10) my net connection will outlive it. get a static ip in the deal, which is helluva useful. i would heartily recommend them.

What do people have against BTO? Agreed - they had serious problems when they started, what with PL and non-existant tech. support. But its all cleared up now - Tech. Support is fast and efficent, and thier network is just as quick as anyone elses.

Oh yeah... and they are cheaper (before wires only of course :))

Just moved to France and got ADSL (Wanadoo/France Telecom).

Works out about £30/month after £90 to buy the modem & installation pack. It's been great so far (10 days & counting) with pings of about 45-70 on CS & Q3A (128up 512down).

Soooooo pleased to have got away from BT!

Its not that I have anything against BTo as such.

No no no no. Not at all.

I just hate BT. Full stop.

What a shower of inept, technically illiterate, inbred, money grabbing fuckers.

I have Tiscali ADSL.

Ping at about 10-30 on their own servers, 20-50 on Jolt servers, 20-50 on just about everyother server. 60-70ms to sweden, 60kb/sec downloads speeds from denmark! What else could I want ?:)
