I read some benchmarks a while ago comparing a 1ghz athlon to a 1.7 intel - both with geforce 3's.

In summary there was about a 10-15 fps difference....

Not a lot considering the price difference

So, is 2 ghz really needed?

Oh how clueless you are. The 2ghz p4s are 0.13 micron IIRC, meaning the core will now stretch to the 3+ ghz region in the long run. Really think AMDs knackered old core can be pushed that far? (hint: no)

Socket 478 is coming real soon. Not as Northwood, just repackaged Willamettes but at least a 478 mobo will be upgradable to Northwood CPUs. Socket 423 mobos aren't upgradable to fuck all
