Eh!?

I quite fancy the idea of getting Half Life 2 from Steam, especially as it seems the online release may well beat the retail release by a little while.

Only one problem. I can;t get the bloody STEAM client to connect. It does it's auto updates fine and then tells me I have no internet connection. I've opened up the suggested ports on my router and still no joy.

Shame really, I think STEAM is a good idea, in principle.

Last interview with valve, Gabe (or what ever he is called) answered the "will we see HL2 on sept 30th" with a "we will see" answer.

Which version do the pre-order people receive?

Right, I'm not at work at the moment, so I can't do much about this, but I don't want anyone to think we're just not dealing with it. Basically, no-one's sure what's going on yet. Like with the release dates, they'll tell us first, and we'll tell you as soon as we know. Because we love you. :x

Jedi Academy is basically Jedi Knight 2 but with better level design with more variety. The big difference is you have a lightsaber as standard from the beginning. This game is not worth playing without a saber.

Mank - get hold of the Jedi Academy demo from BW FTP and play it. If you enjoy using the saber, then the game is worth buying. If you just used the normal weapons then this is a sub-par FPS.

Seriously, saber fights are an obscene amount of fun. As is using force-grip to hold an enemy then force-push them over the dge. Oh, and using force-jump followed by force-pulling enemies way into the air and behind you. Always very funny. :)

In conclusion then: The superb gameplay of the lightsaber more than makes up for the dated engine and "seen-it-all-before" aspect of the rest of the game.

Due to personal event taking over I only realised last night that BF1942 Secret Weapons is out, so I ordered that to tide over the waiting.

Also Civilization III Conquests might be out too !

2 easy steps to sort out ya problem.

1. Ditch the nVidia card.

2. Buy an ATi one :D

Edit: not to sound like an ATi fanboy - you could also wait for the new dets which are meant to improve a lot of things.

Ok, these are only rumours, but at the moment they support a LOT of what we've heard elsewhere...

At the time of E3, the areas and maps shown at the show represented about 70% of the completed game zones - which in itself were about 35% of the full game.

The tools they are using to create the content, environments and maps are so fragile even now that they're still working on completing the above.

ATI signed a deal to have several million copies of HL2 to bundle with their boards - but at some point Valve requested minor changes to the deal which instead of commiting to the next ATI launch date (rumoured to be the 30th ;)) meant they would deliver the game 'when it's done' - remind you of anything?

Anyhow, as I've said these are things we've picked up from all over - one of our american writers who wants to remain unnamed called me two nights ago to say that a recent conference call put realistic dates beyond Christmas

It could all be wrong - in a way I hope it is - the teasers on ATI.com are hinting that something HL2 is happening on the 30th... but as to whether it's the full on game launch I think we've got a little while to wait yet... and if the game does slide into early next year, how valid are their current stances on benchmarking and whatnot?

There's more on the whole OEM bidding, but I really don't want to get into it, people seem to take this kind of stuff way too personally.

The first level on that demo it pretty shit, but the second one gives you chance to enjoy a few saber duels.

MAke sure you use force grip. Dark Side Rools!

I suppose they could buy themselves a few days by saying that it had been released, but every single distributor had supply issues. Or something. So it would seem like it was actually "out there", but just very hard (in reality impossible) to get.

I have faith that it'll be on or around the 30th.

I believe this was cleared up some time ago when people got worried about it being P2P.

The problem with releasing it via Steam a week earlier is that it'll delay the possible retail release date due to steams rather sloppy performance recently.

Go to the steam status page. You will notice that their are 20 odd servers missing from the list. I belive as many others have stated, that these 20 content servers are reserved for HL2's launch.

Right, just had a look at Steams staus page, they have activated a few more content servers, including a UK based one (bravo Telewest). This leaves 12 content servers which as yet are not active.

I did have faith in a September 30th release, but with that now only being a week away and Gabe Newell claiming that "they will be making a gold announcement, and that they won't just send it to retailers on the 30th without prior notice to the public", I'll be very surprised if they do make it.

I'm still pretty sure they'll make it before the end of the year though.
