From halflife2.net

As you may recall, our very own spitcodfry got the chance to visit VALVe's Headquarters a few days ago. In an odd turn of events, he's remembered something that he forgot to tell us: Steam will be sending the majority of Half-Life 2 (encrypted) to people who preorder from it, then a week later, will be decrypted and officially released on the program.

From reading their forums it seems as though Valve will be sending halflife 2 via steam one week before it is released in shops, the download will be encrypted until the day of release.

I have HL2 on pre-order (from GAME !), so I decided to checkout the latest news and went to www.halflife.com, strange.

Note to forum devs, auto-converting URLs should not include final comma :)

I can't see it being ready in time, we haven't heard anything about it going 'gold' and if it hasn't I can't see them doing it all in 4days, but if it has... well

Well guess I'll just have to play the rather impressive looking Rush Hour addon for SC4, although I will also have the Zero hour add on for C&C Generals.

As I am not a CS player, I just realised STEAM is already available, should I download it or wait until I get the game ?

They'll probably release steam with hl2 embedded, so I'd wait for that file to appear, rather than downloading it from steam itself

I been doing some more research and whats all this talk about a subscription via STEAM ? I though it was just some ASE/Gamespy thingy that is dedicated to Valve games ?

I preordered my copy from gamesplanet and they have it showing as being available from 28 November 2003

I believe this was cleared up some time ago when people got worried about it being P2P.

The problem with releasing it via Steam a week earlier is that it'll delay the possible retail release date due to steams rather sloppy performance recently.

Not by this week, but in plenty of time for Christmas.

in what way will an early steam release delay a retail release?

thing is if it did come out on the 30th, it would be strange asnormally games are released on a friday!!!

Sorry my point was the later the steam release the later the retail release. If steam runs into problems they may hold the retail release even longer...although it would be most annoying.

yeah, I think Steams shittyness is probally the real reason Valve have kept quiet on the release date of HL2. I just wish they would announce a delay or confirm it is coming out on the 30th.

Another thing that annoys me is the fact they are releasing 3 versions

1) SP only 2) SP & Multiplayer 3) special edition.

No details on Special Edition yet other than it being a DVD, I guess you will get a book and t-shirt or something similar.

When I made a pre-order I didn't recall anyone saying "which one ?"

Can someone from GAME.net clear this up perhaps ?

I'm quite worried that via multiple releases and Steam that Valve are going to seriously fk this release up :/

Unfortunately this question has already been asked on several occasions with no reply.

I would imagine the middle one, SP & MP included.

<corporate boy>

There's no point in debating when it might come out at the moment. If you're ever wondering that with any game, just look on our site...the most important people in the industry for publishers to give release dates to are our buying department, which means we'll always have the most accurate release schedule.

OK, having said that all it says on the site right now is TBC, but in that case it simply means it doesn't have a set release date. Whether they'll suddenly decide to release it in a week or whether it's being kept back until next year, hell, who can say? The point is when the publisher knows, they'll tell us, and we'll tell you, most probably before you hear it elsewhere.

So Mr Corporate boy :D

Which version do the pre-order people receive?

I'm pretty sure at this rate seeing HL2 before '04 isn't a possibility - speaking to Valve they'd forgotten all about launch dates and were dealing with things of greater magnitude to get the game completed...
