Yes, jDoom has better gfx whereas portaboom is OS-independant.

HL2 will run fine on nVidia cards.

Valve and ATI have done a deal which basically means that some ATI 9800 pro cards will packaged with an ATI optimised version of HL2.

And I think nVidia have done the same with ID.

It'd be commericial suicide for them to only have it working with 1 make of card.

Gah so my 9800 pro won't have special version :(

Not unless you buy another 9800 and give your old one to me :D

I thought id were getting all friendly with ATi anyway, weren't they? I seem to remember John Carmack talking about how wonderful the 9700 was at some point...

And apart from the HL2/ATi bundling deal (which, as far as I can tell, isn't confirmed) Valve seem to have remained fairly impartial on the whole graphics card wars.

It would actually seem that no-one can agree when Half-Life 2 is being released.

From GAME's online shop
As you may already be aware, the UK release date for 'Half Life 2' has changed to Nov-2003.
From an interview with Doug Lombardi of Valve
Il n'y a aucun changement dans la date prévue. La date du 30 septembre concerne le monde.
(Rough translation: "Yes, there's no change in the date. September 30th worldwide")
From Embattle's article, in fact
Talking to the publisher's UK arm, we were told that the official line on Half-Life 2's release date is: "To be confirmed."

In short, we don't know when it's going to be released. However, we should know in a week or so whether it's going to make September 30th, because if it is it'll have gone gold (been finished) by then.

Indeed, one would think that the people making the game would have the best idea of when it's going to be released. However, one thing to bear in mind is that Vivendi (the publisher) will ultimately have the final say in when the game hits shelves, as they'll be making the packaging, CDs, and also shipping out the copies.

It's possible that they're delaying the game deliberately to get closer to the Christmas holidays (Christmas + lots of advertising + sweet game = £££).

Or they may just be hedging their bets, preferring to have the choice between "See, we told you so" and "Hooray, early HL2!", rather than "Here you go, as promised" and "Oops, delay time!".

Or it may even be an Acclaim-style publishing gimmick to get people talking about the game.

I wonder if it'll only be available on steam at the end of september, so they can say, 'We said all along end of September you fools!', and we'll all say, 'but, but, but, I've ordered a boxed one :( ', and they'll say, 'Ha!, for that you'll have to wait till November!, or subscribe to us of course!', and we'll say, 'Oh, poo :( '

Subscription is the way of the future in gaming after all, hey suit type people :p

That would be a bit of a bitch for us poor unfortunate no broadband people though.

Mr. Optimist :)

I have to say I'm looking forward to it being released and I've not been excited about a new game since Q3 came out.

I think Jonty's rumour i probably true, 26th Spetember for normal editions and November (with the Doom3 release to spice things up) for the collectors edition hl2.

Sorry, I thought there was maybe enough rumour for now, so I pulled it. Still, if I can confirm it, then I'll post as such :)

Game messed up.. not for the first time.. whilst they did say Nov at one point, it's now changed back to Sept.

So it's really anyones guess, my money is still on Sept though. Trouble is.. we got no idea what version, cause Game still only list one version.

Interesting story about how confused GAME seem to be about release dates:

In my home town of Cambridge, there are no fewer than three GAME stores, which is damned impressive for such a small town. In two of said stores, the release date for HL2 is given as "September". In the other one, it's listed as "November".

Well the way I see it, it will have to go 'gold' very soon or its just not gonna make it in time for September.

I'm looking forward to HL2, what I'm not looking forward to is the potential need to buy a new graphics card, I have the annoying habit of wanting everything to look its best regardless of the fact I cant afford it.

Just some more icing on the cake:

Courtesy of theinquirer.net:

Some choice quotes..
TECH REPORT'S just-published summary of Valve's Half-Life 2 presentation at an ATI function is nothing short of grim when it comes to the company's projections of how Half-Life 2 will perform on Nvidia DX9-class hardware.
Just how bad are things? Pretty bad. Even the Radeon 9600 Pro out-paces the GF FX by over 50%, while the Radeon 9800 Pro doubles the FX's feeble 30 fps. These are in benchmarks without AA or AF enabled. The game isn't even playable on anything below an FX 5900
Valve's solution at the moment? Run the GF FX series as a DX8 part. Of course this means giving up all the DX9 eye-candy, but eye-candy isn't really useful when you can't play the damn game.
With Half-Life 2 scheduled to ship before NV40, it looks like there's no getting around the fact that ATI is the only game in town when it comes to HL2. As for Nvidia, NV40 had better bring substantial performance increases—or its going to get real ugly in the graphics war
So there you have it.. as far as HL2 is concerned, ATi r0x0rs, Nvidia sux0rs. :)

Who says they have to announce when it's "gold" ?
And I'd much rather they hold off on "Golding" it until the last possible minute... it'd be nicer to come home on the 30th with a game that's undergone extensive bugfinding / fixing, rather than to experience 15 days of "hurrah, it's definetly coming out on the 30th" when they announce it's "Goldness" on the 15th.

/me can't wait for HL2 action
