I was wondering when someone was going to post something - Couldn't be bothered myself as we already had earlier discussions on it.

Well, there we are then. I now realise I have no idea what to do with that information and am a little disappointed at the lack of loud bangs coming from Switzerland.

Indeed, thier porn industry is pathetic.

I wasn't aware they'd lost it.

No they've not found the Higgs. Its another particle that resembles it.

Finally, I can speak about it! We were all given fairly clear instructions that leaking anything would be very bad for us...

We finished taking the data on the 18th June and its been rather busy since. Our analysis which will come out at the end of July are a lot more advanced and will clarify lots more.

I was actually a bit worried that CMS would have a better result than us but ATLAS was better even though we had less stuff finished. There is a slight difference in philosophy, CMS release information promptly, ATLAS can take more time but when its done it is normally a bit better. Its remarkably close how similar the performance of the experiments is.

No they've not found the Higgs. Its another particle that resembles it.

We have found the Higgs boson, we just don't know if its the Standard Model Higgs. Until we measure the properties of it, we won't know exactly what it is. It may have additional properties but the ones we know it does have make it the Higgs.

I reckon I deserve a custom title. "Discovered Higgs Boson" :)

I was listening to a professor on the radio this morning talking about it. I got my info from him. Glad to be corrected. Thats pretty amazing news TBH. Good job.

I wonder what weapons of mass destruction this new particle will help us build.

amazing news finally a complete standard model but what can we do with it? what will it allow us to do that we couldnt before?

Presumably Brian Cox will be along shortly to tell us about the Higgs Boson and how it resembles a blue smartie.

He'll then pop that smartie, and take us all on a fantastical adventure!

i like brian cox even my lass can understand what hes on about. ye it seems dumbed down to the majority of the FH users going on past topics on here but hes made it accessible to the masses.

From what I've heard, it will point us in the right direction to understand other things, like dark matter.

We dont actually know if this new particle conforms to the standard model or breaks it yet.

The REAL question is... Will it blend?

Read about it today, ended up sparking a 2 hour debate in the office about religion and science. Nice find though, hope it opens more doors for us.

I always worry about finding something that we want to be there.

Dark matter next eh?

Who was the professor? The trouble with these things is that the person chosen to be interviewed on the radio is normally some very well respected professor who will not have been anywhere near the analysis for many years. Sometimes that professor might not even be a professor in particle physics (eg., Stephen Hawkings is theoretical astrophysics, Brian Cox is also astrophysics).

Shouldn't that be "Probably discovered a particle that could be mistaken for a Higgs Boson from a distance" ? :p

The results presented at the end of 2011 had 12 different channels analyzed. The results presented today JUST had 2-3 channels analyzed from 2012 added on. It takes millions of CPU hours to analyze each channel. We are adding the new channels currently and its not leaving anything to doubt. You may ask if its actually a Higgs Boson, but now its been announced its never going to be known as anything else! The interesting channel to look at is the Higgs -> tau tau as it is likely to be the most sensitive (ie., easiest to detect change) to new physics. Depending on what that analysis shows will allow us to tell pretty quickly if its Standard Model or we have more stuff to find. The production rate of Higgs is slightly higher than predicted but given the current precision of measurements we can't say if this is significant yet.

Presumably Brian Cox will be along shortly to tell us about the Higgs Boson and how it resembles a blue smartie.

Hehe, Brian Cox is a rude word around a lot of CERN. He has done lots to raise the profile of physics (especially high energy physics) with the general public, but he isn't a particle physicist. We have some of the world experts in the UK and they don't get asked.

The REAL question is... Will it blend?

An important question indeed! I am sure now that we have found it, it will be one of the first properties we try and measure.

I understand its a big find even if i don't understand what it really is. Will it have any impact on or lives in the long run? does it mean we will be able to invent new things etc.

Or just research knowledge only?
