I know a homeless guy who has over a million in the bank he was a big shot laywer till his wife died at which point he gave up on everything and started sleeping in the park. His son now lives in his old house and this guy sleeps in the shed at the back of the garden when its too cold.

I started speak to this guy when i saw him looking in a KFC window and offered to buy him lunch. So not all homeless people are scumbags and not all of them need our help.

Nope seen the house and he did have a key to open the back gate to get to his shed and saw him withdraw £500 once and lend it to a homeless couple. He always seemed the real deal. He showed up when i moved and got all my mates a beer too.

After watching the southpark episode "Night of the Living Homeless", I have decided that it is in the best interests of all concerned to run away from them, preferably waving my arms and screaming!

Whilst I know what I said was ignorant and Naive when applied to the rest of the world, if you came to Middlesbrough you'd know why i outright wouldn't give to any sod on our streets.

Tris can probably back me up on this, anyone who's homeless in Boro has at least a 95% chance of being a smack head, so i'd much rather see them chucked in a blazing inferno, nothing untowards meant to yourself, but in Middlesbrough, the homeless would quite happily stab you for all of 20p.

I agree, the majority of these people are junkies. But tbh, junkies are junkies, homeless or not. It doesn't matter tbh, a junkie will kill you for 20 regardless or whether he's stealing from his/her mom and his next target is you.

In my case, I had to get extra-streetwise and steered clear of them in Liverpool. I can spot a junkie from 50 paces now and the same goes for a homeless person. I know all the associated stigma's, traits and faults that go along with the territory. It's just too bad that there's nothing said about people who actually fall down on the ground and then fight their ass back up to where they where and actually go on to do something in life. That is, unless you buy alot of Tom Waits album's

I think thats it he realised when his wife died he had been spending all his time working to get money and not spending it with his wife and kids. So gave up on all of it. Like you say having no worries must be nice and for him he knows he can always get a warm bed a shower if he needs it.

A lot of people here in Gothenburg who beg on the streets have come as groups in cars from certain other parts of Europe. They live and sleep in their cars which they park somewhere outside town, and every morning they drive into town and place members of their group on strategic places to beg. In the evening the driver comes and picks them up. This is apparently a better way to make a living than being unemployed in their home country. After a month or so the group drives home and life well for another month or so before going back to beg some more.

If i saw someone was actually homeless and just had a rotten deal dealt to him in life, i'd feel more sympathic and perhaps donate a little. But these days you don't see those kinds of people on the streets - it's all foreign "guest workers". I'm sure they are to be pitied too somehow, but perhaps they should try and apply for real jobs instead when they're on their roadtrips.

I have read about similar in the UK a Dad took his two kids to a river bank where they got dirty. He then droped them around the corner from the business he OWNED and sat there all day and watched his kids beg. The police got involved when he started having his kids miss school.

A thought; if you are the kind of person who generously donates to the poor and wretched from time to time -- how do you decide which poor soul gets the penny today and who doesn't? Or do you help all of them?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great to help those who are in need, was just a question that sprang to mind.

Last time I was in Paris this year, some Bulgarian begged me for £1, I gave him a Euro coin and told him to stfu

Personally, I don't give at all anymore, for the reason i talked about in my earlier post.

Back a few years ago though, I could give them some spare change if i had some. But it would always depend on their attitude and body language. And of course if i did have any spare change. I'm not exactly rich myself so wouldn't give away big bills of money.
