Why the tops of smarties tubes always have letters there?

What is their purpose, why were they there?

What made nestlé put them there?

Gawd you must be bored. Do some work!

:)

And I always figured it's something to do with the batches they were made in.

As far back as I can remember (which is a long long time :p) these letters have been there. I really don't know why, but I am guessing they were there just so kids could collect them and then put them to some educational use making up words and such.... no doubt the kids of today look for more 'x' and 'z' characters than you would normally find :)

*thinks about that for a moment*

I wonder if they'll ever come out with a new age edition of Scrabble with revised numbers of the letters available per box... can you imagine the score you could get for 'Iroxxorzkthxzzbye" :)

Taken from Heartless @ http://feeder.proboards.com/index.cgi

Thank you for your recent enquiry via email concerning Smarties.

The letters are printed on the tops of the Smartie tubes to increase the
enjoyment that can be derived from Smarties. Many children - of all
ages - collect the alphabet and we hear from play group leaders and
teachers who use them to help in teaching children spelling whilst they
enjoy themselves.

Thank you once again for taking the trouble to contact us and for the
interest you have shown in our company.

Yours sincerely

I am now depressed :( I was sure the entire alphabet was not printed. I had over 300 tops at one time and never a x or a q or even a g. I eventually binned them.

later

hehe, few years back me and my friend had a gorging session on Smarties just so that we could go round with the tubes, apply pressure to the tube near the lid and *ping* <for want of a better word> the lids at each other at a reasonable turn of speed :D

Got quite accurate with them too :p

I once did that with a sachet of mayonnaise to a guy in my local bus station, the outcome was erm.....interesting....as it didn't really look like bird poo, which is what I had intended it to look like ><

hows it funny wats the joke i dont get it

The general idea was to state that i was too stupid to recognise the difference between a smartie and its brightly coloured container lid. Hence i had a shit load of plastic in my stomach which would probably need to be removed (Hence, the emergency ward)

Granted, it sounds funnier in me noggin' than on paper... err... screen...

I used to place smartie caps over my eyelids.

Why? i don't have a clue.

Random fact: Orange smaties are orange chocolate!

When my brother was younger he spent a weekend in hospital because of blue, pink and orange smarties. They are not a laughing matter!
