Valve's Gabe Newell has released details of the vast array of purchase options available for Half-Life 2. Also expect to see the final (retail) version of Counter-Strike: Source on Steam next week.

"The Half-Life 2 offers have been finalized. Details are pasted below. The Steam offers will be available for purchase next week. Those who purchase via Steam, will receive the final version of Counter-Strike: Source immediately. Half-Life 2 and other games in the Steam offerings will be made available to purchasers upon their release."

Retail Boxes
Standard Edition - includes HL2 and CS:Source. Ships on six CDs, in one of three box-art packages (Gordon, Alyx or the G-Man).
Collector's Edition — includes Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source, a Half-Life 2 T-shirt and a Prima book sampler. Ships on a single DVD.

Steam Packages
Bronze - HL2* and CS:Source.
Silver - HL2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam.
Gold - HL2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 1: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam, Complete Strategy Guide from Prima Games, 3 different Half-Life 2 posters, Half-Life 2 hat, Half-Life 2 postcard, Half-Life 2 stickers, Half-Life 2 Soundtrack CD, Chance to win a trip to Valve! G, if you buy CS:source via steam you are also commiting yourself to getting HL2 over Steam.

Basically you pay for one of the HL2 packages next week, get CS:source then and get the rest of your package as soon as it is available.

should piss VU off considerably, as I imagine a lot of people will buy via Steam simply to get CS:source now.

This is what I'm concerned about. I'd rather get a boxed version but if it means I'm going to miss out on HL1:Source and other things I may cancel my pre-order.

I would imagine Valve will make it avilable as a stand alone purchase as soon as it's ready, they have done with all the other mods avialable via Steam.

Ive been thinking about cancelling the Preorder as well, talk of it coming out at christmas isnt good, i dont wanna play Half Life, just CS Source. So im not keen on waiting a good few months if its going to be available within weeks.

I just got an email from Gameplay about my preorder.

Thank you for your pre-order with Gameplay for Half Life 2. We have
just been informed by the publisher that this item is going to be released
on DVD-Rom only. If you do not have a DVD-Rom in your computer the game
will not run.

So I guess HL2 will be on DVD instead of 6 CDs now.

Yep thats been confirmed by GAME as well. The UK release will be on a single DVD-rom. The rest of the world may have to suffer with cd-changing though. Yay for us. Even though I'm buying it via Steam and dont really care.
