Top end an M3 is faster than an Impreza, anywhere else it isn't though. As for the Evo vs Scoob argument......I do have a video where a Scooby slightly beats an Evo 7 on a track. Evo was better at braking though.

Anyway.....heres a little video with an Impreza P1 vs an M3 on a trackday meet.

Grab it before my webspace dies!!

Trem!

Good vid.

I kinda got the feeling the M3 driver might have bottled it a bit? P1 is yummy.

Well the guy in the M3 runs a trackday school thing so he must be a decent driver. The M3's are a bit boaty on corners....it did look like he bottled it but then again we will never know.

I assume the M3 is that little dot on the horizon for the duration if the vid. Note the Scooby didn't get past until the M3 braked ridiculously early for no apparent reason.

So I'd say yeah, an M3 is about as fast as a P1/STi. They sound a shitload better aswell.

Yes, the M3 was the car that got the head start yet was still caught up by the P1, the gap was closing all the way around not just on that corner luv.

Yes not awfully convincing, don't think the scooby was even giving it proper beans either, as would be correct on the out-lap when you should be warming up the tyres and brakes etc. The M3 could well have been instructing so not going quite as fast as possible, and showed good etiquette by getting out of the way early at Abbey. The only thing the vid really shows is how far up his own ass the maker of it is.

I couldn't even SEE the M3 for most of the lap, until the driver clearly backed off for the last couple of corners. And it really wasnt much of a head start, certainly nowhere near enough to explain just how quickly the M3 pulled away through Becketts. Guess the P1 driver should just be thankful it wasn't a CSL he was taking on. Mind you judging by the size of his ego, I wouldn't put it past him.....

Which would you rather have, an M3 (aspirational choice of estate agents everywhere) or a P1 (aspirational choice of men in Burberry caps and getaway drivers everywhere)? I think estate agent is the lesser of two evils meself.

Tough choice.

There is a part of me that likes "executive quick" and another part of me that likes "rally slag quick". I've always been a sucker for the M3, I do really like it.

I'd take 'em both.

While normal Imprezas are becoming chav cars I really can't see a chav owning a P1. They are around 17k for a 1999 model(only year it was made I think).

The chav factor is what is making me want another car now, although I do love my Impreza and it is an estate(re-mapped, bigger turbo etc about 300bhp) which ain't so chav I guess.

I was thinking of having an M3 Evo but I reckon a Mitsu Evo will be my next choice. Really fancy an Evo 5.

Btw Golfs are the ultimate chav cars(in your face Bodhi!!)

:p

I said its what chavs aspire to, not what they can have, without resorting to a crowbar discount ;)

Novas/Corsas hello??? Chavs cant afford to insure Golfs thank the lord. I'd hate to see a chav get hold of a GTi 16v or a VR6....

I think you're being a tad harsh on Tom, Nath. When I finally can afford a new mini, and don't live in an area where it will get stolen/stabbed/keyed the first fortnight, everyone here will be subjected to pictures, stories, and perhaps even a song about it. You'll be invited to the christening where Humphrey (or possibly Betty, depending on his/her gender as a car) will make a guest appearance. Then you can all kiss the mini, and go home. If something makes you happy, it's hard not to talk about it.

Glad you've spoken to the insurers - there's nothing worse than feeling like you might have just walked, smiling thankfully, into a huge balls up. At least keeping the option of insurance open will help keep that at bay.

Ive got an RX8 and it is indeed the muts nutts when it comes to handling. Yes the 350Z can out pace one in a straight line, but Ive seen numerous comparisons between the 350Z and the RX8 where they talk about the complete package, not just the floor it from standing figures. The RX8 can out handle a 350Z and this is where it makes up the time on a complete lap. Ill try and dig out some of the videos and articles. Its horses for courses and personal taste really. I looked at getting the lotus, but I do ~25k miles a year and wanted a tad more comfort than sitting in a tin can. I didnt want a TT because i thought they were quite common. The 350Z, was quite a lot more expensive than the RX8 and personally I didnt think it was justified. I also considered a Crossfire but didnt like the look of the back end. I like my RX8, and I dont really give two shits if someone wants to diss it cos its half a second slower 0-60 than their (dream) motor, just try and follow me home down the B4040 one night and we will both have plenty of fun. (Unless you are driving a metro cos then Ill see you half an hour later tbh :) )

Forgive me if I am wrong, and since I took up gaming I haven't paid alot of attention to cars etc, but the RX series are all rotary engined, and with that comes a smoother delivery of power to the wheels and hence better drivability, no?

That's where I'd put my money.

BMW 323i tourer all the way though, of course :p

The argument on the car forums is that the rotary engine has bugger all torque therefore you need to rev the tits off it because the power band is so high, therefore the longevity of the engine is in question (and it drinks oil).

That's not a bad thing, some of the best cars need to be revved like a madman: Integra Type R, RX7, Lotus Exige, any motorbike, Forumla 1 racing car etc.

I understand the RX7 is rumoured to require some serious engine maintenance at around 60k miles.

Which would be completely understandable - but I very much doubt you would drag it out quite so much. There's a fairly clear and distinct line between being proud of something hence talking about it and bragging. Tom crossed that line quite a while back, and it's getting a little dull.

The RX7 did need the rotor tips replaced at 60k. That allegidly has been fixed for the RX8 and the engine is supposed to do about 120k before needing much work done to it.

"Drinks oil" is subjective. I personally get through about 1L of oil, every 1 - 1.5k miles. Considering I get my oil bulk through the rx8 club for about 6 quid a litre, then seeing as it does for me ~22 mpg an extra 6 quid ever 1.5k miles is really nothing when you compare it to the petrol costs, the fact a single tyre is 150 quid, etc. It does depend on how you drive it though. Mazda give away a Prodrive track day when you get the car, and that day I did 80 miles and used about 3/4 of a litre of oil but that was an exceptional day.

They arent very tourquey at all but they do deliver the power fairly linearly throughout the complete power band. There is a damn good reason that they red line at 9.5k revs though (and not just the pure grin factor of it) and you do get the best of out the car above 4.5k revs, the peak tourque being at about 8.5k revs.

However the thing is so damn smooth, you really dont know that you are doing 9000 revs, hence they put a buzzer in to let you know you ought to be changing gear soon. Whatever anyone says, the grin the car puts on my face when I hear that buzzer going off is well worth it. Plus after the Prodrive day I can vouch for the fact that the thing handles like a go-kart. It gave me an awful amount of confidence in the cars handling abilities.

Im happy with my RX, Toms happy with his Audi, others are happy with their Evo's, Lotus's and Saxos... Im glad everyone doesnt drive the same car tbh, cos the M4 would look damn boring to me if everone was in the same motor.

Yeah, I knew you weren't having a pop at it I was just trying to enlighten the uninformed and reinforce the point that different cars are better at different things. I just get overly touchy at the oil thing cos theres a guy at work that out of hand dismissed the RX8 as a shit car as it requires topping up with oil. He just doesnt see that 6 quid of oil every time you that youve spent 400 quid on petrol is (to me) a trivial matter for an outstaning car in that price bracket. It is overall comparible with the likes of 350Z and a damn sight cheaper to boot, which for me, swung it.

Anyway, bringing the thread back on topic, I had someone rear end me in my old MX5 at a junction. He put a 1cm crack in the bumper. He wanted to go outside the insurance so I got a quote from the Mazda dealer. They suggested I got a new bumper. Total cost 480 quid.

Im sure if he went through the insurance then the cowboys that they get to fix it would have filled the bumper. However, I didnt see why I should lose out on my until then perfect car so I got a Mazda quote. He did question why it was a new bumper and I said "cos thats what Mazda said, if you want to go through your insurance, thats up to you".

He paid up. He did pay the garage direct though which I thought was a great idea. It meant that I couldnt artifically inflate the price, and he knew I was handiling it through a dealer and therfore wasnt fleecing him.

And this mama goes boldly where no roadster or boxter can go... :p

I haven't made a piccy of my new ride but it looks exactly like the one on the pic above - except that I have Toyo tires on mine. Feels like I am driving on rails. *flexes mightily*

I'm pretty sure a boxster/TT can do the school run and nip to Tesco like that SUV can, which lets face it is all they're used for. :p
