I have as a second drive a 15gb Maxtor drive which about 5 years old. Recently It has been very slow to spin up and access files. Under device manager everything appears fine and all settings are correct, UDMA, no conflicts etc etc.

When I say it runs slow I mean sloooooow. Say I want to play a divx movie it can take up to five minutes to open the file. The hardlight drive is permanently on and the whole PC just freezes, yet CPU ueage is less than 5%?

What gives?

Yep, I'd get all the data backed up off it pronto then consign it to the bin.

hdds are so cheap theres not much reason not to backup+replace with a 150gb version or so really, specially if the bugger is on the blink!

oooo, that's spookily similar to what happened to me last month. I had a 20GB Maxtor that was in an older machine that I hadn't used in a year or so. When I upgraded recently, I thought I'd revive the feker (20 GB would make a good system disk - me thinks)...it took hours to format!!!! (I went out, came back, and it was still at it!)

It's almost as if it's forgotten what speed it's supposed to be (7200 rpm?)...a 20GB HD that thinks it's a floppy?!?

BIN !!!!!!
