You can't just place the siegeequipment anywhere and think that you will dominate. it will be wrecked and you will have wasted important resources! This especially considering if you are running in a smaller group!

Why that group of people didnt flank around or spread out is a lack of communication. which is why organising the zergs is what makes a server strong. And again this video is one of many that are already out on youtube, and this game is still in a beta stage.

Also do not forget that you can't move the siegeweapons, combined with rescource cost it is important to place it smart and think ahead.

What he said. It's adding to PvP by requiring more than very low-level tactics and strategy. Instead you need to have good knowledge of the maps both for the mid-level strategy of where to place siege weapons for best effect and also to counter such.

eksdee, would you be happy with a similar-size (as WvW) area where all that is counted is number of player kills, perhaps a BF-style system where each death and respawn causes some tickets to count down and first to zero loses ?

The bottom line is tho, DAoC is not a successful game. Not by current standards. Sorry, at the time it was awesome, but atm its not where "the market is at", see my bit about bottom lines above for more info
It was a really incredibly successful game when launched though. I think if a DAoC 2 was launched now with upgraded graphics and a lot more stuff then it would generate more hype than GW2 has.

I'm not excited about GW2 at all tbh.. I'll give it a go at release but I'm not expecting it to be awesome because I know I'll just be disappointed.

I think that depends, ArenaNet is better to reach the bigger audience(through commercials), but I suppose Mythic would have learned their lesson at a second release :)

So what you actually want is pure Arena PvP, even if in a massive open area? Else what is there to fight over/for ? It's either just about killing all the enemy players, which I think only has meaning in an Arena setup (points/ratings, leading to some sort of reward primarily as recognition for how good you are) or you need something to fight over/for, and we're into WvW or BGs with a different score-keeping system.

And in all those options you still have the possibility of just knowing you stayed alive whilst pwning multiple people (who hopefully gave you a good run for your money) and never mind whatever score system is happening in the background.

Not even remotely. I've said this so many times, over and over. It's so tiresome that people in this thread just assume that I want something that is all about epeen or whatever else. Why do you make this assumption? When did I ever post anything saying that was what I wanted? Wanting quality PvP and a challenge is because that's what I find fun and, guess what? I play games for FUN. If I wanted efame from an MMO, I'd go and train to be #1 in WoW PvP because that has all those things already. What I want is a game where I might meet another full group, or maybe I'll meet two, maybe I'll meet a massive zerg, who knows? But what I want is a game that gives me, the player, and my group the ability to put up in a fight in those engagements by using our teamwork and skill as players to overcome the opposition. I don't feel GW2 gives me that option, for various reasons - from the downed system, to the lack of healers, CC meaning positioning is almost a completely irrelevant factor just at a base line.

commercials? where?... commercials are bullshit anyway, does anyone watch a commercial on youtube or tv and go "omg that looks awesome! I'm going to buy it right now!" any more?? I'd be pretty surprised..

I actually do, and I quite a few of my friends does. So many times links have been posted on facebook from a review made by one of our newspapers. And them saying "This looks AWESOME!".

This is also what attracts new players to the game market.

So that's a possible yes to my second paragraph then ? Big area, no idea who you'll meet in it, all that counts is PKills, with some accounting so you know who 'won'. And indeed GW2 is not offering this. You could perhaps suggest it to them as a variant in SPvP.

Oh and congratulations at finally articulating exactly what some of your problems with GW2 PvP are.

eksdee you dont like the pvp format in GW2 ...... fine and dandy , that is YOUR opinion and you are welcome to it , however it obviously is an exclusive opinion in this thread as noone else agrees with you , which is also fine as it is THEIR opinion , however the problem arises when you dont stop banging on about it , someone posts something on the thread and if you have been quiet for a few days we get a one word or one sentence answer , maybe you are bored and just fancy trolling people people to get a reaction , as they say bad attention is better than none , YOU dont like the pvp in GW2 , FINE , i think we know that by now , so please be a good boy and troll somewhere else and get your attention there , thank you :)

Ah, I do indeed see a problem with the Downed mechanic in PvP now, more so in sPvP where numbers are lower. Thief has an ability when downed to stealth and move, this gives you chance to use the heal. Mesmer seems to have something similar as well.

I just spent about a minute in Downed state cycling around stealth+move, heal, some damage, repeat. I *think* it was just some turret or illusion type things that kept on hitting me whenever I came out of stealth and thus breaking the heal.

It's stupid I could do that at all. Whilst I appreciate the stealth+move ability to initially attempt to get out of sight... I think it should have a 2-3x if not more longer cooldown.

Hmmm, on the other hand that was just due to the idiots not finishing me. If you Finish, the cycle above doesn't work at all. So like I said before, FINISH THEM!

I agree, played sPvP the entire evening and this one thief kept on using the stealth + heal move 4-5 times in a row every time.(it was impossible to kill him) And it cant really be the way it is supposed to work. And this was even when we were trying to finish him off.

At the end he agreed that this might've been a bug tho, and he stopped using it after 10 rounds or so xD

See my followup, it's not impossible to kill a Thief (or Mesmer, or any other class with similar) doing this. You just have to 1) Be very quick to start Finishing them, and 2) be prepared for the vanish/move, spot them when out of stealth and restart finish. If you do #2 you WILL Finish them before they can heal or vanish/move again.

Still, I think the CD on the vanish/move should be a little longer to balance it up.

Oh, and the other issue is the move part if you're in certain places. Like near a drop... it can end up moving you from up top to down below and back again, which means those trying to Finish have a climb in one direction and may well not get there in time.

Probably best to just remove it entirely, even though it fits the class, it's just too strong for Downed state.

Oh and talking of Mesmers... they're a royal pain in the ass. I ended up turning auto-target off (i.e. if I hit an attack with nothing targeted it would choose something near me) because when a Mesmer used their invisibility after spawning illusions I'd just end up targeting an illusion rather than hitting the source. Of course with auto-target off I then had to fight the targeting system to actually get the Mesmer targeted.

I've a feeling you have to chain-stun/blind/whatever the buggers to take them down quickly. I chased a few, and despite having a blind and a 'turn to stone' ability, not to mention a 'chill on hit' they just kept on invising and running. For reference I was playing a Thief, quite possibly with not the best build :p.

I did, my whole guild did infact along with basically every single high level guild in the alpha that had gotten invites due to their status in GW1. Infact the early Downed System changes in April(ish) time came around based upon a huge thread which started off from a post I spent about three days writing and discussing with my teammates.

However, given my/our problem(s) with the game are at a pretty core level, I wouldn't expect any game developer to completely change their vision for the game based on alpha testers' feedback and so I stopped playing. I follow this thread at work mainly when I'm bored, but I do think it's important for other members of this community to get to see both sides of the coin. I don't think GW2 is a bad game for everyone, I just think it's a bad game from a 'serious' PvP'ers standpoint and from the point that I feel ANet essentially lied in the way they marketed WvW especially, but the game as a whole tbh.

The game was universally derided by everyone on the alpha form EXCEPT the massive zerg guilds like Boon Control, Oo (forget the full name, that was their tag) etc, which goes to show where the game is at. Once again, for those of you with the attention span of a gnat, I'm not suggesting those people shouldn't be made happy by the gameplay, but when the gameplay is only enjoyed by one subset I don't see that as a good thing.

Edit: If anyone decides to be as petty as Chosen and decide to question whether or not what I'm saying in the first pargraph is true, go on the alpha forums (I'm almost positive there are others in the alpha here) - possibly in the archives now - and look for a thread by Andy Hemming entitled 'The Downed State: lowering the quality of PvP in GW2' (or something similar, the bit after the colon could be different).

tried my first arena pvp last night, did the pve up to lvl12 or so and did minimal WvWvW stuff (I liked what I saw and didnt want to ruin it) my only problem is I couldnt tell a mesmer from their pets till I saw it self heal usually. :p I need to look at more defensive stuff for a ranger though as alot of people I came up against had some form of immune to dmg ability, but I couldnt see one for my profession.


My one concern with the game is the chat options, instead of REGION chat or so I think you can use a MAP option but no LFG channel; and even then not many people on my server seemed to use the MAP chat. I did 3 dynamic events and saw literally no chat, maybe people were in guilds or in other party's.
I think they need to add a DYNAMIC EVENT chat which you automatically enter and leave when you go in and out of the orange circle on map, as in the events people were just lying as Downed but not asking for a rezz not even in SAY channel; so I couldnt see them which all the people/mobs.

Yeah, I took to trying to spot which 'one' was acting differently in general. At least some Mesmers pop illusions and then run away, which makes it obvious which one they are. More cunning Mesmers might pop the illusions, move a little (through an illusion or two), and then try to act just like an Illusion.
