But is greatest sporting achievement the same as greatest sporting moment? Like some of the goals folk have posted are very impressive but a single goal cant be called an achievement can it?

I was tempted to say Usain Bolt's 100m as well, but he just made it look too easy tbh :p

The goal I posted wasn't just any goal.. It secured Copenhagen the danish league against the team we hate more than any other which at the time was neck and neck with us

Now who's being argumentative? :p

Kidding people...kidding. Pitchforks down!

I think a single goal can be an achievement, but for example there's no comparison in a single goal in a world cup and winning the same world cup.

Kinda hard to compare like i said before, because in running, winning is always an achievement, but in hockey or footie for example, single goal can mean victory.

What do you reckon? For me, an old guy with a bad hip whacking a ball around a field isn't particularly impressive but what would you cite as being better?

For me it has to be this:

But an old guy whacking a few balls around a limited field and not even moving is good? Pfffffft :p

Wayne Gretzky's and Bobby Orr's careers
Muhammed Ali :)

Imo sport's you have to be fit (or strong) to be pro in. Snooker, golf etc doesn't count. :p

But is it really an achievement to score a goal in a minor league? :flame:

That 147 isnt just something I dont see ever being beaten - I don't see anyone getting close.

And you do have to be pretty damn fit for some of the epic 35 frame finals they play

Greatest sporting moment? Not sure.

Greatest Athlete? Probably goes to Larissa Latynina. 18 medals at the Olympics during her career. Mind you at this rate, Phelps will have her comfortably beat at the next Olympics.

Pfff

Bowling, Snooker, Golf, Dart etc are no sports thus it can't be the greatest sporting achievement of all time!

And a bunch of thugs with IQs less than their shoe size kicking a ball back and forth does count? Just cos you have to be able to run for 90 mins?!

I could train to be able to run that long but my craptacular lack of coordination and skill would mean I still sucked at football. Sports are defined by requiring skill and practice - not muscles

Now i'm confused.

I really need to find a difference in argumentative, discussion, flaming etc.

'cause them sound like fighting words to me!

Mohammed Ali vs George Foreman - Rumble in the Jungle.

YouTube - Ali vs Foreman - Round 8

Bit of Background for those that have never heard of what imo is the greatest fight /comeback ever ever........

WIKI said:
In 1967, Ali had been suspended from boxing for three and a half years for his refusal to obey the draft and enter the Army. In 1970 he first regained a boxing license and promptly fought two comeback fights, against Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonavena in an attempt to regain the heavyweight championship from Joe Frazier. The two met in 1971 in a bout dubbed the Fight of the Century, and Frazier prevailed, which sent Ali into fighting other contenders for years in an attempt at a new title shot.

Foreman had quickly risen from his gold medal victory at the 1968 Olympics and into the top ranks of professional heavyweights. Foreman was greatly feared for his punching power, size, and sheer physical dominance. Still, Joe Frazier and his promoters believed that despite Foreman's ever-growing list of knockouts and victories, he would be too slow and unrefined to stand up to Frazier's relentless attacks. This would turn out to be a grave miscalculation, as Foreman won the championship in grand fashion by knocking Frazier down six times in two rounds before the bout was stopped. Foreman further solidified his hold over the heavyweight division after he demolished Ken Norton, who was the only man besides Frazier at that time to defeat Ali, also in two rounds. Though Ali had avenged his losses to both Norton and Frazier in the years since, the younger Foreman seemed an overwhelming favorite against Ali.

If anyone reckons anything greater has occurred in the last 1000000000 years you best watch your back!! :)

Toh, it's a sensible fucking request, without the need to pick apart the subject title. If you have not got one the answer is don't post.

I would go back before I even existed and say what Jesse Owens did was superb. Considering he couldn't even eat in the same restaurant as white people back in America and was given no real acknowledgement by the countries government until it was deemed it would not hurt it's parties chances of election.

More recently, Usain Bolt - How anyone can run that fast is just insane.

As must as it hurts a little to say it :p Arsenal going unbeaten for the whole season was an epic achievement. They played superb football along the way, and considering the quality of other teams that they faced no a week to week basis it is something that I can't see happening for many years to come.

Oops also that 147 was ajoy to watch, Ronnie is amazing to watch when he's on his 'A' game.

Got to agree with Jesse Owens, talk about sticking it to the system, that guy was a Hero.
Michael Phelps winning 8(Ithink?) Golds at last years Olympics was pretty amazing as well.

Yup talk about making your own country, the supposed greatest one ever look like an absolute cock. Along with sticking it to Hitler in the same games!!!!!

Pure win on both counts!! I know Calr Lewis did it a few decades later but it was the circumstances that Owen had to contend with as well.

Ronnies 147 was quite impresive too tbh. And as for the Golf commentator saying that will be the greatest sporting achivement if he pots that ball, LOL... Golf is the most boring shit sport ever, is it even a sport?

Totally agree, I hated UTD at the time. I think that hatred stopped in that game. The atmosphere in the pub was electric, can't imagine what it would have been like to actually be there!

Well, most of the game was pretty average but what a come back.

For me as i watched the 19 home games and 6 away ones it will be the Arsenal unbeaten run I think it was a brilliant achievement and the football on offer was awesome.

And since reading about the below i find it moving, not just what these guys suffered but also the fact the white athlete was banned just for supporting equal rights just hits home for some reason
