SMART monitoring is reporting that my brand spanking new 200Gb Samsung Spinpoint HDD has a spin-up time failure, and is likely to fail within the day.

Not too annoyed though, as the shop I got it from is literally around the corner from where I work, but still a pain, having to re-install...

If it's not failed yet copy the drive using ghost or something (even dd under linux will do at a push). I'm sure it's something a decent shop can do for you.

I've a secondary 75Gb hdd, which I backed up to last night. But further reading suggests it may just be SMART being tetchy with a new drive.

Shop testing it atm, and they're saying it's ok as far as they can tell, so it may well be ok.

Got it back, and they maintain it's ok. So I've disabled SMART on the hdd in the bios, and let it run for a few weeks to see if it's going to continue.

Samsung have a utility you can download that is very good at checking HDs over.

i hope that "shop" isnt Mplex

Im not certain on their testing procedures, But i've seen items go back to them which were entirely fubar'ed and they returned them saying they were fine, but when we shipped it off to the manufacturer they detailed that the card had a manufacturing fault and would never have powered on under any circumstances.

Id do what embattle says, run the Samsung software and get it to print out the information if it does spot a fault, then go back with it and request a full refund and go elsewhere :p

Tis Mplex. Their Duncrue branch is out the back of my work (I work for the Council's Waste collection dept in their Duncrue complex).

It's been working ok since that, and the spin up time has corrected itself. So we'll see...

Found out what the problem was.

My old IBM Deskstar was the problem. It was failing (it's failed yesterday), and when I removed it, the Samsung started working perfectly!

They were both on the same IDE channel (Samsung as master), so it's a bit odd.

Anyhoo, it's sorted, even if I am 70Gbs of space down, I still have 110Gbs free after backing everything up off the IBM one :)

Yup, it was a deskstar. Now that was the 2nd one of those I had (the first failed within 2 DAYS of me getting it), but that 2nd one actually lasted about 3-4 years believe it or not...

But it's dead now, and everything is running better than it was before :)
