Granted, the click, and also the deadspots eitherside of the click are really fucking irritating at first

good choice dude, that genre is commonly known as Techstep. If you want more information, the best tunes out there and the best record shops to frequent then pop along to www.breakbeat.co.uk and have a browse around. If you wanna have a listen to stuff that people are making at home along this genre then pay a visit to www.thednb.com and check their charts.

Can we stop the Vestex Vs Technics argument, if in ten years time someone with vestex comes on here and tells me that there vestex is still in top working order then I'll concider buying some, because to work with they're just as nice as technics.

Theres isn't any point arguing the difference because I've fucked up many a battler with belt drives and up-faders. It's all about skills. As it happens I liked the vestex for mixing on, but find that floating tone arm really annoying when trying to put together a routine, But if it's good enough for the ISP's though, I guess they're good enough for me.

they're ugly as fuck though

Gimme 9 and a half more years and I'll tell you my Vestax's are still working, THEN go buy some and apologise heh

Tech 12*0s or bust babeh

What a great arguement you have against Vestax, despite being EXACTLY the same to use if don't use any of the extras that you have at your disposal, and easier to use if you do.

Regardless of what's already been said, I had a set of Vestax PDX-d3's and they were the canines protuberances. At the time I was looking for a set of decks that had more than the de facto +/- 6%/8% pitch shift - and the fact I already had a set of Pioneer CDJ-550s (which could do +/- 16%) and a Pioneer DJM-500 (sorry, just showing off a bit now :p) meant I wanted a vinyl system that could keep up.

Vestax PDX-d3's had pitch speed readouts too, none of this using the strobe nonsense. And a pitch bend wheel, so no record stroking required.

Probably explains why I was so shite at Euroquake the first time I used a set of Technics. :(

Tell you something tho, with a mixer that does BPM calculations, CD decks and vinyl decks that both have pitch readouts, plus all your normal VU meters - you can DJ without even having to use headphones. I even got my sister to do a reasonable quality mix with them.

S'funny really because I can spot a DJM-500/600 from a mile off, they use them pretty much exclusively on Tong-style mixes on Radio 1 - you can even hear them cycle through the SFX (flanger is a usual favourite) :)

You start loosing your creativity and become a hack, a run of the mill pub dj who mixes records that get requested by the fat bloke who sits in the snug drinking guiness and went to ibiza once.

Grow up and out of your name dropping with equiptment, pls for the sake of the children who then grow up thinking that to be good they have to have the most expencive gear on the market, its a common myth among sports, computer games and music.

I know a guy who dj's pubs with a laptop, sticks mp3's in a list and looks busy as they crossfade themselfs , thats the future of pub dj'ing so I advise anyone out there mixing chart topping ibiza hits go's and gets some talent.. also if your going to name drop then do it with somthing impressive! tell me you just gone to japan an bought a vestex pro 7 SAMURII and are now doing 16 click flares and I might be impressed...you do know what a flare is?

I know I know!!!!!!!! It's like this.

Discovered/invented by DJ Flare and further developed most famously by DJ Qbert, this scratch is much like the transform in some ways, only instead of starting with the sound that you are cutting up off, you start with the sound on and concentrate on cutting the sound into pieces by bouncing the fader off of the cut out side of the fader slot to make the sound cut out and then back in a split second. Each time you bounce the fader off of the side of the fader slot it makes a distinct clicking noise. For this reason, flares are named according to clicks. A simple one click forward flare would be a forward scratch starting with the sound on as you bounce/click the fader against the side once extremely quickly in the middle of the forward stroke creating two distinct sounds in one stroke of your record hand and ending with the fader open. In the same manner, 2 clicks, 3 clicks, and even more clicks (if you're fast enough) can be performed to do different types of flares. The discovery and development of the flare scratch was instrumental in elevating this art form to the level of speed and technical scratching that we're so used to seeing today.

Don't mess wid me, for I know all

*ahem* big thanks to http://www.scratchdj.com/ for their help *ahem*

I don't DJ anymore so I honestly couldn't give a rats arse what a flare is.

If you'd read my original post you'd see that I said "probably explains why I was so shite at Euroquake the first time I used a set of Technics." - ie. because the decks I did have took all the "usual" elements of DJ'ing out of my hands.

I think you already established that you're au fait with DJ'ing terms in an earlier post, you don't need to labour the point by proving to everyone what you know about the various aspects of DJ'ing terminology. I'm sure I'll sleep well at night despite not knowing (or caring) what a flare is.

Thanks anyway.

Hang on I thought that the click thing was called crabbing.

Flaring is what you get when you combine crabbing with a particular movement of the vinyl. Or maybe I'm wrong.

TUG is spot on about where it came from though. :)

And by the way, I do pub gigs all the time and I ain't EVER using MP3's or laptops. Vinyl first, if not then CD and failing that use a fucking jukebox and forget about a DJ.
MP3 DJ'ing is a waste of time. Thou needeth not skills to Mp3 DJ, apart from choosing tunage, and anything thats powered by Microsoft I would never trust to run properly in a club/pub environment anyway.
