Why? Because this assumes we live in a perfect meritocracy. And I think you'd find it hard to back that claim up.Big G said:But seriously, if you've worked your arse off to get money to have private health care, why shouldn't we be entitled to better healthcare than those who can't afford it? As Bodhi says, bit of a communist view isn't it?

Will said:Going private does NOT speed you up the transplant list. It buys you faster appointments for some operations, and higher levels of care (private rooms etc) but when it comes to organ transplants, you queue like everyone else.
I hadn't done anything about organ donation for years, but your post reminded me. I just signed up online, and they add you to the register, and post you a donor card. I've gone for the scoop me out till I'm empty option.Whipped said:Just out of curiosty, does anyone here carry an organ donar card and if so, have you ticked the box labelled "Scoop me out till there ain't nothing left", or have you specified things to take.
I've specifed that my lungs and corneas can be be taken.

As for transplants - there's always more people waiting for a transplant than there are available organs. Many patients die on the waiting list - so if you do manage to get a liver you haven't "jumped the queue" you've been "lucky at the unfortunate expense of others".
That's why I'm also of the opinion that if someone's an alcoholic and they get a liver transplant and don't give up then they don't deserve my sympathy.
Not trying to be harsh or anything - but if you've been given a new liver (with the associated "someone else probably died because you got it and not him") and that's not sufficient to help you beat your illness (and I totally accept it is an illness, but one where you must bear some of the reponsibility) then IMHO you've blown it.
I would never wish him dead - but he doesn't deserve the column inches any more. Stick the scientists who die during the course of their work trying to cure liver disease on the front cover of the papers instead - they're more worthy.

rynnor said:I would say that if your a doctor with a liver for transplantation and the options were either joe bloggs or George Best (who is rich enough to sue you) then its likely that Joe bloggs wont get a look in.
Rubber Bullets said:You might say this, but it is naive.
Transplant lists are national, and are more complex than first come first served, but are based on clinical need and tissue matching etc. One doctor wouldn't simply find himself with a spare liver to give away. (images of a shopping basket left outside a GP surgery on a cold frosty night with a message saying 'give this liver a good home' pinned to it come to mind.)
The fact is though that the majority of people on the liver transplant list are there because of alcohol abuse, and not because of other diseases. There are exceptions (I work with one guy) but most are there due to lifestyle choices.
