Hmm loads of different views in here.. nice to see it hasn't turned into a slanging match for a change.
I'd start quoting but i'd be here all day, so i'll make my points quickly.
N.Ireland - From what i've been taught from family/school etc the whole thing over there is more to do with land, although through the years things have got screwed up and it's become about religion.
This doesn't just happen in Ireland though.(the fighting i mean). A few years ago about 5mins from where i live, a kid was lying sleeping in his bed when a guy broke into his house, set him on fire, and battered him to death. The kid was 15 i believe, only thing he did was play for Celtic boys club(mostly catholic supporters). To make matters worse, police tried to charge his bro for it.
Bigotry is disgusting imho, it still confuddles me why every year over 1000 orangemen are allowed to march through where i live making a racket and looking like gimps, however catholics are not allowed to march in the same way as this is enciting(sp) racial hatred.
Personally i'd rather appreciate the earth than some "god" that seems to do nothing but take pleasure from my suffering, imo that is :)

Funny really, William of Orange wasn't even English. Dutch or thereabouts I think.

Icemaiden:
I said that :)p) 'repatriation' they called it (or somthing) also the town derry was renamed Londonderry to make it sound more english (this was all aimed at calming the rebellion). Even now most catholics call it derry or even free derry.

Tom: It was because he was a protestant (and a tosser as far as I can recall). Because he was a numpty and had nothing else to do he decided to fight on the protestants side.

/edit after research:

He was married to Mary II (the second)...

<quote>
William III (William of Orange), born in 1650, was the son of William, Prince of Orange, and Mary Stuart (daughter of Charles I). Husband and wife were also first cousins, both being a grandchild of Charles I. William, one of the most significant players on the continent, constantly strove to spread Protestantism and decrease the Catholic influence of France and Spain.
</quote>

So basically he did it 'for the craic' :/

I fail to see what Northern Ireland has to do with gay priests, but anyway your knowlege of post 17th century Northern ireland leaves a lot to be desired. Id recommend you read up a bit more on it rather than posting nonsense.

God and religion don't exist, the only thing that exists is myself and my conciousness; and you are all frigments of my imagination.

The problem with expecting proof is that if you're going down a general Christian route (and most of the major religions), God expects you to choose to believe or not. The concept being that if you are given proof of God's existence then you are no longer deciding of a free will whether to believe or not.

but of course if you choose to exercise that free will and not believe, (given the absense of proof), well then, when you die, you go to hell for an eternity of pain and suffering.
Bit coercive if you ask me. What's the point of giving us free will and then punishing people when we use it.

I also never quite understood why this supposedly omnipotent being seems to be so insecure that it needs to have all this worshipping going on in the first place. I mean what's all that about.

And frankly, if he is there, why is an all-powerful being so interested in a bunch of meat bags from a backwater planet at the arse end of the whole vast universe getting down on their knees to worship him? Sounds like a pretty needy guy to me; a bit like a kid in the back garden tormenting ants with a magnifying glass.

yeah what he said! - better than me :(

Religion isn't the cause of the worlds ills, it is simply an excuse. People will always find a "reason" to fight. If religion didn't exist it would be something else; which side of the bed you get out of, eye colour or the shape of you nose. The world is full of people who like to cause trouble and they will find an excuse to do it.

I may have read it or heard it somewhere, if so all kudos to whoever orignally said it, but i can't remeber doing so. It happens to be what I believe. As someone not religous it would be easy for me to blame religon for all the worlds ills but the fact is religon does far more good than bad even if you only count the religous charitys such as Christen Aid etc.
