Last month some Blizzard rep said that 40% of the people who left for Age of Conan was back in WoW, so it's not such a big stretch.

Probably true, still it's not a terribly bad game to get into now, it takes very little effort to reach max level and it's all pretty fun - and you'll never really be content starved ala AoC.

Two things:

First a blizzard rep saying "40% percent of the people we lost to another game are back", is a bit pointless. They lost 100% of the people they lost and ONLY got 40% back now. 60% still think AoC is better evidently.

Not to mention, blizzard rep talking good about WoW? Nooo, really? :D

Second; it's still as terrible as it is, if you found it terrible in the first place. New content won't change the core. New classes, new stuff, new dungeons, same WoW.

edit: Well as an example, for AoC statistics - It has gone from 27000 hours played daily the 27th July on XFireto barely 9000 hours played daily the 14th of August.

Simple answer, summer. most of AoC players are workers who enjoy AoC on free time and during the summer, most are "adult" enough to get out of the house. Not disbuting the loss o players after initial "WEEEEE!!!! game!!!", but that happens with all games.

Also, Xfire, hmh...most non-hardcore don't even use it.

Thats kind of the opposite from what I've heard across the majority of boards.

boards can say as they please, i am basing it on my personal experience in the beta :p

The game has potential, alot of it, and the developers are actually listening to feedback (i wish they would fix the bloody targetting and animations which have plaguede it from the beginning though) so it is getting there
There are good features in it, but it felt forced
I played it because i wanted a fair idea of what it was like rather than playing it because i was enjoying it

Also bear in mind alot of the people in the beta are very goa/mythic loyal (E&E's, event people etc etc) and they have seen the ammount of communication within the closed beta forums with the development and gm's, so critisism will be somewhat watered down

To be honest i hope they do pull it off, but my prediction is that the majority of the playerbase will be Warhammer fanboi's rather than people looking for a good MMO

Just because only 40% are back in WoW doesn't mean the other 60% are still playing AoC :p

New players won't automatically assume that the core is bad however, and as I said earlier - most people actually left WoW because there's been nothing new to do really since may or so.

You would assume that the numbers would actually be rising in august if summer is the reason, especially considering the very pissy weather in Europe the last few weeks :p

The percentages, doesn't matter, it's still "iffy" at best as info. They don't evne know that the players went to AoC in the first place. Or even exact numbers on people who left for AoC. PR statement, nothing more.

New players won't come because of LK either. And saying msot left because of boredom, well, that's assuming.

August is the usual "vacation month" in europe, so no, it is going as should be assumed. Down.

I know quite alot of people who haven't played WoW but are considering starting to play it at the release of WotLK mainly because it's an excellent time to reroll for old players and have their new WoW friends play with them from the start.

Not gonna bother argueing over the percentages anymore, point is still that AoC was sort of a flop.

Point never was about AoC not flopping, it was about AoC dying.

Nonoe hasn't disputed that AoC wasn't finished and needs work, heck, i think i was first to say it even.

TBH, not like any of this matters.

WoW will have players.
WAR will have players
AoC will have less players.
DAoC will lose all of the player to WAR.

Everyone wins.

Well, I've beta:ed WAR since june last year, and I beta:ed AoC since december and comparing the two.. I don't think I could ever bear playing a game that doesn't have an at least as good combat system as AoC. WAR's combat system was a skeleton, ugly and uninspired. Sure it was beta but even if they improved it a lot, there's nothing innovative there at all. Just the same old.. with elves and farting goblins for some WAR flavour. Yay.

I agree that aoc needs a lot more work, but i guess i'm one of those willing to stick with it and enjoy the ride as well as i can. We've got a great bunch of people there, and our guild is still growing because we kind of create our own content while waiting for Funcom to add more.

Most of us still haven't reached the content "cap" though. :)

I highly doubt it they are completely different games :p

Well you must realise a majority of the players will be coming from DAoC as it is, it's a mythic game and it's been plastered everywhere. Most ex-daoc players I know will be coming to play this. Will see 2-3 months after release most probably.

Neither of AoC or WAR is anything like DAoC, sadly. It could be fun if they were, but they are not.

WAR is actually a WHOLE lot like WoW, which is even worse.

I know this through a vast playing of the Beta.

The problem is that it's trying to do what WoW is doing, but because WoW is WoW, it's simply put just better at it, my whole impression of WAR is exactly the same I had when playing LotRO, which in itself is a really good game, but when put next to other mmo's falls short.

As said previously, not looking for a WoW/AoC/DAoC/LoTRO/EQ type of game, want something based on Warhammer which is what (hopefully) we'll be getting. The fact you say it looks WoWish is a bit, odd. Since (As I keep repeating on other threads) it's actually the other way around, WoW was based on Warhammer, but they changed it (so they will look the same) but WAR sticks (hopefully) to the tabletop/model based ideas.

The UI is simillar from what I've seen, but the game does look better designed, especially if you look exploring/doing weird things. I'm going to try it out, hope it's good. I disliked WoW. =<

WoW is not WoW. WoW is... MeH. Problem with WoW is that it's a PvE game, and as soon as the next WoW expansion comes out people will play, 3 months after leave and play another game. I think that's where WAR will win, because it's (prove me wrong, I'd like to know for sure) the end game/all way through RvR/PvP thing going on.

WAR is WAR etc..

Wrongly repeating, The Warcraft Franchise looks like the warhammer desktop franchise
Warhammer Online looks like World of Warcraft (because wow was first) on first glance, but when you play it is more gritty and dark as mentioned previously

WAR will live even if it is just average (which it is atm i am afraid, i was thoroughly dissapointed in the pvp :() because of the fanbase for warhammer

Sadly there is NO MMO on the market which will match up the the levels of the DAoC PvP tbh :( What was wrong with the WAR PVP?

I am going to hold my judgement until the final result as there is alot of balance going on
as it is at the moment casters rule because of the pathing in the rvr zones (one way slopes etc at choke points)
