Actually, i think he should go with the old sob story approach.

It's a tricky one, but when he is left alone with the girls friend, he talks about how he said what he said, but got no response and he is quite distraught by it. Ofcourse putting on a brave face and asking for secrecy for the discussion.

This way, he will seem genuine, vulnerable and as such, might strike the fancy of the friend

So yes, in retrospect, on those odd occasions I'd have preferred "I'm not interested" because it really does save a lot of time and hurt feelings in the long run.

There is no such thing as "turned down gently", for men there's turned down and not.
