BST was first proposed in 1907 and decreed by parliament in 1916, by which time mechanisation of farming was well underway.
Principly it was to allow the rest of the country other than the farmers to take advantage of the extra hours of sunlight in the evening, this also reduces power use. During the war we had "double summer time" when the clocks were put forward 2 hours, purely for productive reasons.
The only reason for keeping the shift in time is the north of the country would still be in darkness at 9-10am if we stayed in BST.
