Unless your laptop happens to be using AHCI for your hard drive, then that might lead you into running into a brick wall. (i.e. it wont see the drive)
you will need to use nlite and slipstream AHCI drivers into an XP cd (easiest)
Or if you cant slipstream (i dont know why, nlite makes it simple) you might have to do a usb floppy "hack" involving modifying the txtsetup.oem file to include usbstor (more info on techsupportforum.com )
Sometimes it might even be easier and quicker just to use the recovery partition if it has one
If you have a laptop from the last couple of years, then it almost certainly has a recovery partition. If you wipe that then you can't restore the system to factory default.
