For Those Running Windows XP

Also I don't like the idea of this whole registration thing and the thing about XP not working if you upgrade your computer.

That only applies to the Home Edition m8, I would avoid that all costs......

This a cool cutomizer for XP http://www.tgtsoft.com/

and www.skinz.org all ready have a growing collection for it :)

has anyone tried the bandwith info I started the thread with ??

I've tried it but not noticed any differences, but then it's difficult to judge on a 56K connection, anyway. Download rates and connection speeds vary so much anyways.

erm, got hassled on that last post ...

I also have a prob with a stick of 256 DDR RAM from Crucial that I am trying to locate, i.e. which one before I return it fror replacement..

So untill my monster gets stable again I am kinda being timid with it, so I have been exploring XP and its .msstyles, nice and simple.

I'm running Windows XP proffesional and I love it. The features are amazing and it's never crashed on me.

Well done MS!

Win XP Pro it is then. Do you have to register the bugger to make it work though?

Depends what version you go for. If you buy a legit copy of XP Home or Pro then you have to Activate it, no probs. A quick, automated, free dial-up and you're away. Takes 10 seconds. If you then change certain hardware you have to activate again. No probs.

The alternative is a ha><0red version (yeah, good luck!) or even better, a volume license copy which doesn't require Activation.

Bear in mind that Activation and registration are two separate things. You have to Activate XP but registration is still optional.

XP has been doing some freaky shit today. The entire taskbar locks up, XP can't kill it and the HD light stays on. I wonder if its my 75GXP going to the great hardware store in the sky.

Fuck it, I think I'll stick to 98 SE coz I dont have to "activate" the fucking thing to make it do anything and I don't like the idea of having to contact Microshit anytime I want to upgrade my PC.

Smacks of big brother to me.

While we're on the subject does anyone know how to stop Windows from being amazingly clever and notifying Microshit for upgrades that I don't want? The automatic updater has a very annoying habit of downloading files right in the middle of a CS match.

A low level format seems to have rescued my 75GXP. Nice.

Your loss, mate but you're really playing up this activation stuff. I've used XP for about 2 months now and my total activation time is about 20 seconds. Once when I installed XP, and once when I replaced sound card and shifted PCI devices about.

Time saved through non-existant crashes, improved performance and the actual pleasure gleaned from simply using the OS is immeasurable.

Or you could use 2k, get all the "benefits" of XP like no crashing, without activation and inserted lameness. :D

Or just get a copy of XP with the activation taken out. Much like the copy I'm running right now :)

None of you know WHAT you're talking about. I've used every MS OS extensively since 3.1 and XP is by far the best of the bunch.

Haven't I said this before?

-

Ive used every operating system extensively from 3.1 upwards but that is not the point here. The point is windows xp is no better than windows 2000 for the power user and if anything its worse. I changed from XP back to 2k because:

1) It couldnt find items using that fucking annoying search tool under its own nose

2) It repeatedly prevented me from deleting my own files and claimed I "didn't have access" because something was using them, infuriating. (And just to stop idiots claiming they might be system files, or I might have a program open (because THEY WILL SAY IT) they were avi's that were not open in any way, shape, or form)

3) Hibernation is on by default, what is that about?

4) There were more reasons but i cant remember them.

In the end any sensible person realises that xp does sod all else that win2k doesnt except annoy you with its incompitence. What do you make of that?

Heh heh. Just found another cool little thing in XP. You can smooth all screen text by doing this:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Appearance and Themes.
Click the Display icon, click the Appearance tab, and then click Effects.
Click the Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts check box to select it, and select ClearType from the list.

Click OK, and then click OK again.

-

Font smoothing has been in since win98 or even 95
Its under display properties and then the effects tab. I can't belive you have been oblivious to this fact when you claim a good knowledge of using the OS's since 3.1 ! Anyone who has just plain fiddled for 10 minutes will have found it :/

*sigh*

What do you make of that?
I just disagree with you.

Re. ClearType I did say 'It's a much, MUCH better implementation than in previous Windows versions.'

I'm fully aware it's been around for a while. Previous OSs have just chucked in some grey pixels on the corners of letters and called it clear. XP does a much better job withmuch better results.

Bored now.

\me very bored as well

It amazes me how ppl spew shite about things they nothing of
Dimebag for example muahahahaha

Someguy was speaking a lot of sense and sharing good info

XP is excellent at running yer rig, once you tweak it back a bit (takes less than 5mins) such as using classic start menu etc,

WFP is stronger than ever, in fact it now works as intended all along, if this is getting in yer face logon as administrator and do yer file shufting and replacing.

I think a lot of you read all the horror stories and no more re. XP and activation. it aint that bad, (mind you I am using XP Pro with a volume license that I was lucky enough to acquire, but I have also bought Home Edition)

I have heard opinions that XP + GF3 + Det 4 drivers is benching 40% faster than Win98SE.... a bit chin strokey yeah, but then again consider how flacky and heavy 98SE is, and think how lean NT5.1 is and the fact it can now run apps independently of the OS i.e. as if they are two OS's and do not tie each other down. XP has a Kernel that is smaller and faster and using it makes this apparent.

btw, I h8 98SE and love W2K and am starting to gain a favor for XP, although a lot of you will think I am sitting bashing of Mr. Gates, going by my rant, but the truth is I hate MS and respect Gates and have now found the 3d MS product that is half decent, Netmeeting being 1st lol,,,

shame we cant just live in a *nix based 'puter land......
