I am now imaging Thorwyn having previously said "green witch". It amuses me.

It wouldn't be so bad, if they had the same rules for the words :p

Lancashiiiir.

Yet the hobbits come from the shair.

Make up your damn mind :p

The Hobbits come from the "shire" which is pronounced exactly as it is spelt (although as a work of fiction, Tolkein can spell it how he wants), and Lancashire is pronounced as it spelt too.

So what exactly is your point?

Like your nanny it is. Maybe it's not lancashire then, but i'm sure as fek that you pronounce (-)shire differently in some places.

And shire isn't the pronounciation in lotr either.

It's not said shi-re.

So you're wrong in that too, it's not said as spelt.

Again - it's a work of fiction set in a fantasy land.

You are confusing regional accents with the proper pronunciation of the word. Shire is pronounced exactly as it should be, unless you pronounce words incorrectly due to an accent.

Are yu seriously claiming that shire is said shi-re?

The word is said in different ways, as itself or at end of places(for example) not just due to accent and it's most definetaly not pronounced as it's spelt.

no it's not pronounced Shi-re, that would be stupid. It's shu-ayre if you want it phonetically. But that's how you pronounce that word in English. break it up sh-ire rather than the way you are.

Christ, you two get a room :p

I pronounce it "shear". Southern England beats Wales, Scotland and Northern England. :)

Yes it is because you're wrong and you've proven yourself wrong none the less :p

FYI; going "wow, just wow" isn't exactly flaunting your skills of language.

I pronounce shire as SHY-er.
I pronounce Lancashire as LANK-a-sher. The a is more of a glottal stop than a syllable (LANK'sher).

A classic case of regional accents changing the sound.

I love Greenwich. Was there today for lunch. Then took a ride down to Chislehurst. Was lovely in the autumn sun

I pronounce it Sheer, I pronounce my home county as North am ton sheer and Lancashire as Lan ka sheer. I pronounce Shire on its own exactly as it is written though.

Anyway, there is no W sound in Greenwich however you pronounce it, its Gren ich

I live in Lancashire :p and most people pronounce it "Lanca-shuh" rather than shire :p

Never really noticed how horribly I pronounce it until this thread :p
