so liverpool cant beat barnsley but sink inter? :p

read on beeb that "Benitez is excellent at beating and outwitting teams better than his own but has no idea how to beat lesser teams" seems to be true today!

I don't know about all that but Liverpool were clearly motivated tonight (much like United after the loss to City) and there were out to prove a point. They never gave Inter a moments peace all night and that is what won it for them, there were no brilliant tactics just honest hard graft and it deservedly paid off for them. As I said in another thread, they did the exact same thing to Barcelona a year or two ago and humbled them. If they delivered that much hard work on a weekly basis they would be worthy challengers for the league, as it stands they have a decent shot at the Champions League instead but it only takes one off night to undo all the hard work and that is what they cannot afford to let happen.

Lol :p

Well the Chelsea game was absolutely fucking dire. They seemed content with just sticking 11 men behind the ball for 80 minutes of the game and didn't really press.

Drogba looked like he didn't want to be there tonight, if he's going to be like that for the rest of the season he can rot in the reserves for all i care.

We talked about this on MSN earlier and I did say that you need your strongest 11 out for away games, those away goals are vital. Chelsea fielded a strong lineup tonight but it could have been stronger, certainly Lampard would have started ahead of Ballack for me.

Yep - i think Grant had one eye on sunday which is fair enough but i would've liked to see Lampard get more than 5 minutes at the end, we really did lack a decent final ball and a runner from midfield into the box - Essien was ok but he doesn't compare to Lampards. Beletti's free kicks were awful as well.

Don't get me wrong, Inter were stupid for not attacking effectively and granted, liverpool did win but it is still worrying when it takes 55minutes to score against a very complacent 10man team; even the first 30 or so minutes against 11, Inter were hardly out giving it their all.

Does this mean Barnsley are better then Inter too then? ;) ;) ;)

It's been proved time and time again that scoring against a 10 man team is actually often harder than scoring against an 11 man team, at least in the short term since they just sit back behind the ball.
A team unbeaten in 5 months isn't going to just fall appart defensively if they set their stall out that way. What Liverpool did well especially second half was stretch and tire the Inter players to give themselves the chance.

I still think we were very very lucky to get the red card, but what surprised me that they didn't touch on more in the commentry, and what might actually be a bigger issue is the fact that after the red card they will not only be 2 down but missing their best defender for the next leg. I also believe that you can't appeal against 2 yellows like you can against a straight red?

Aye, he was given a very short leash.

Then again, imho they should just give him the red card the moment he steps on to the pitch. The man is an absolute fucking menace to fellow footballers.
Doubt i have ever seen a dirtier player.

Aye really don't like materazzi, too dirty for my liking. Football like that doesn't belong in the game.

Keiiiiiiiiitan??

He'll make up something about Liverpool deserving to win. We'll see what happens in the 2nd leg.

Torres is a little shite, diving scum!

Following in the footsteps of Gerrard!

Inter had a bad attacking game, they had 1 centre half sent off and another injured, by that time there was nobody to properly contend with Crouch for high balls, therefore Liverpool just kept hoofing the ball over the top for him.

Still, Liverpool actually only passed their way through the Inter defense about twice, rest of the times it was just either defended or hoofed over their heads for Crouch.

Ok its a good idea, but its shit football.

Gerrards goal was nice, Kuyt's (sp?) wasn't, just a rebounded bag of crap :D

rantover.

They also don't rant and rave like a jumped up little oik how amazing their team are.

Theres a liverpool fan around these parts who's just like that though.

The special one summed it up best

"If you're not a big club, you choose one competition and you fight in that competition and forget the others. Big clubs - we cannot do this"

Materazzi certainly deserved the red card... just for beeing Materazzi :D

Other than that, it's no big deal for Inter really. I rate Samuel as a better defender than Cordoba, although he might be injured atm. It's going to be tough for Liverpool on San Siro.

I agree about the Materazzi part.

But Cordoba was really the best player on the pitch yesterday until he got injured.

he did indeed do well. Samuel could have done the same, if not better though :) it's all about hitting the right day.

Some knob in the crowd was using one of those laser pens in Ronaldo's face, think it happened in a Chelsea game back along, I hope they get caught and are locked up and throw away the key.
