You cant find a striker for yourself? Shit man, they are in abundance. My choice would have to be Bojan from Barca. Hes a must buy.

if your playing huntelaar play him as a target man newbie

on tactics page goto team check "target man" then feed to head only, he'l get bags of assists for owen

tbh you dont even need to play him as a target man in this one though, he should still score plenty

and lol @ villas defense

and why did martin o neil change to a flat back 3 when they went down to 9 men, 9men vs an on form united 3-1 down, wouldn't you just go for damage prevention at that point?

shame 3 of the 4 goals were awful on villas behalf, and even the semi ok rooney goal (2nd) was just poor defending, felt more like watching a training exercise than an actual game :(

pique looked real solid though, no worries about vidic being out for a few weeks now!

Aye, it funny seeing a load of Utd fans going "Who is Pique?", really annoys me that they call theirself Man Utd fans. He been a real prospect for a couple of years now and it only that we got such a strong defence he will have limited games this season.

THat said, I miss Vidic. That guy is one crazy Serbian that always entertains me when I watch the team. You know even if the squad is playing bad Vidic will be working his socks off. Would dread to be on the opposite side with him around, would feel like a rabbit in the head lights of a truck the way he goes in for every ball :D

lol, Piques been really good whilst on loan for zaragoza last couple of seasons, not all united fans are glory supporters :) he will start to push for a place in spanish squad soon me thinks (Pique and Albiol at the back is fairly good, both are tall strong and fast)

Yeah Vidic is probably my fave united player, he is the typical "english" CB, tall strong rough etc- and scary to boot! but I think pique is a fair replacement and will not complain if he has to step in :D

still annoyed fergie hasnt signed a striker with some height yet though, the other top teams all have one, drogba/pizzaro adebayor torres/kuyt even berbatov at totts- we have louis saha, good one.

edit: Got Boca as a feeder team (Yes I was delighted as well :p) and chelsea just got an offer of 9.5m for palacio accepted, do I equal it so a) have another top class striker and b) just to p1ss chelsea off, or save funds for someone else?(looking into aguero and will make him a left winger for when giggs is past his prime?)

15 games into my first season and "relegation strugglers" Scunthorpe are now sitting fifth. Lost first 3 games of the season playing 442, changed to a 433 attacking formation which seems to suit my players more and since then won 8 drawn 2 lost 3

Young Jordy Brouwer (19 years old), bought for a bargain 150k from Liverpool has now bagged 10 goals in 12 starts, including a hat trick in a 7-0 demolition of Bristol City.

Enjoying the game so far

Just found out- there are 2 glaring bugs with the game atm which the first patch should cure

Was right on one of them- controversial events within a game (amount of offside goals penalties etc etc) is faaaar too high, and having to answer referee questions after EVERY game isn't how it is suppose to be...

And 2nd major bug, closing down in the tactics section is completely underperforming, apparently just before the release of the game the developers felt that closing down was dragging players out of position to such an extent that forward runs and simple through balls were leading to too many goals, so they reduced closing downs effectiveness

However they completely overcompensated to the point where closing down options are pretty negligible and the best way of defending is tight marking and simply having superior players at the back until next patch, so no super swedish of '94 teams that base their gameplan on a solid back line that doesn't commit and a very hard working midfield (which is usually my way of playing QQ) and a DM is pretty much needed to not concede too many at the back in the top flight- which in turn limits attacking options unless the DM is played as a playmaker, which is forcing into one style of play etc yada

anyways I'm babbling, just thought I'd share it with you all in case you were getting worried about the dodgy penalty and offside decisions, and why your team seems to concede alot when the tactics should cover it!

i like it, especially all the mucking about with gorundsman and setting yourself a target to the board, rather than the board telling you what you expect, you can tell them :)

I like the way you can just pick managers at random and tell them they are tosspots.

Javi Martinez of Atletico, someone gimme an opinion on him

scout says hes as good as scholes but wont improve much, but hes from Atletico (so bound to be good) and only 19yrs old with better stats than fabregas- could my scout be a bit of a turnip?

do I shell out the 17m?

Pfft, the funniest bug in the game is to do with Italian Clubs. Take a top flight italian club. Go to reserves/under 18s. Move all to first team. Continue. And as if by magic you now got a worldclass selection of gray players you can offer contracts too. Nastily stupid bug that but could net you a fortune. Sell all your known players and have random greatness on tap :eek6:

Hmm, are there any specific database settings needed to get this to work? I tried with a large database and alot active leagues and go no gray players at all with Parma.

Scratch that, I now get grey players but not one of them could be considered to be world class or even as good as the current youngsters.

Very nice :D

Aye, it a stupid bug that can be abused so easily.. makes it worthless doing italian league as part of a network game as someone can easily abuse it.

Reloaded my game and trying to make a decision now.... can get Owen for 9million, wages of £61k a week. Not to bad but really deciding if need him at all... thinking of training up Ronaldo to go there in an emergancy and selling Saha as he made of glass!

The second Saha got fit after his 3rd injury of the season I sold him for £3million just to get him off the big wages.

will be down to rep more than training facilities, just tried it with juve who have awesome training but lowish rep atm and theyre all crap (however it is repeatable so you could just get say 2 or 3 of the 16 that come up then put your old bunch back down etc till you had gods)

kinda like playing in WC germany/holland bug is still there with internationals (well they fixed holland but the germans are still major OP) where they have oober non existent players as the national pool is fooked for them 2 countrys (how can this not have been fixed by now tbh!)

back on track with united, won the league (12pnts clear) won the LC, lost to plymouth who went on to win the FA cup (lolz- had 17 shots they had 1, lost 1-0) and won champs league against chelsea in final- but it did get more realistic than when i posted earlier, had to switch stuff about around november as teams were starting to get dodgy results against me :(

class players upto now- banegra from boca (£1m 19@start of game) lulihna from santos(?) £2.6m and bargain (class irl as well apparently) berlusschi (boca again, £4m'ish) andy carrol (6ft 6 and mega target man, as good as cheating! £8m 18yr old from newcastle) miguel veloso (£8m from sporting, possibly the next pirlo imo, and very versatile)

useless plays in uniteds starting team- neville (brown is better- got rafihna and colocini anyways) so sell for 4m+, carrick (not versatile, much better AMs and DMs in team- sell for 11m+) saha (man of many an injury- sell for 7-8m) scholes (too old, becomes useless by 2nd season, managed to get 5m for him probably could have got 8m in 1st season)

that nets you about 30m which bumps money upto 60m, and another 15m can be gained from changing budget which nets a nice 75m for transfers which is easily enough for a target man and some young utility players!

transfer budget for this season is £123m :D

That easy to fix though by a quick bit of editing.

Open up the following folder from your Football Manager 2008 install \data\db\800\lnc\all

Open the "Fake" document in word then edit the
#Germany
"Fake_National_Team" 771 1
to
#Germany
"FAKE_NATIONAL_TEAM" 771 0

May have to start a new game though for it to take affect, but it will give it the real team.... doubt they ever get the licence to get the team, luckily they leave the little loophole for you to sort it yourself :D

Pretty new to Fm08 - well used to play many CM many years ago.

So many options its making my head hurt.

Download the demo and started with Liverpool, had an average preseason beating AC Milan 3-1 but then many other poor results. Then started the prem and got whipped by Everton 3-0 lol. Won 2-0 against some team in CL.

Bought 1 player, Huntlaar and all my funds have now gone.

Any tips especially tactics/formation for a complete novice?

Seems odd I can beat milan 3-1 yet get hammered by everton. Milan was at home, everton away though.

start with a 4-4-2, standard, play about with tactics so your defenders actually defend, midfield are varied and strikers are attacking, etc, common sense but does make a diff (loads of options in tactics screen, best way is to use the "view" condition and then you can guage your teams overall settings and replan them- but dont try anything too OTT till you have a feel for it)- theres even pre sets of mentalities for various team-roles eg. centreback pacey striker etc

forward arrows and back arrows are very handy, Farrows are used to dictate where a player will run to once your team has the ball, Barrows when you dont have the ball

let your assistant manager do alot of the work (options from the drop down menu and you can select him to do contract renewals friendly games team talks etc)

use your 'ask assistant advice' to see which players he thinks are strongest in each position (get team report)- may not always be true but gives you an idea, and where to start spending

training does matter! play about with your schedules (if you leave mouse cursor over the type of training it says which things are effected eg. ball control is 1st touch etc)- be logical but dont let the overall workload of the schedule exceed "medium"

set one of your scouts to "scout next opposition" if its not setup already, the little blog of the next game gives you an idea of how to play

listen to the odds on matchday- if your 1-5 odds on to win, its likely the other team will play defensive, so you need to either also play defensive and look to score on the break, or play possesion football (ie slow tempo short-mixed passing) and break a team down, also the dreaded formations like 4-1-4-1 are a dead giveaway to a team thats probably gonna have 1 shot all game but sit 11 people on the goal line for the rest :p

dont play players under 95% condition, and try to get everyone at least "match fit" before season starts

use the media to your advantage- mind games with fierce rivals, positive comments about teams that have given you a good game (managers will make comments back and that will give team morale a boost, "Is pleased with MrX's recent comments to the media and believes team cannot fail to underperform with current manager" etc)

half time team talks are VERY IMPORTANT- get angry with your squad if theyre all playing at 6 and not really doing anything, also telling your better players (match winners) that you 'expect a performance' prematch is also a nice lil trick (works wonders on rooney/ronaldo in derbys:))

affiliated clubs- always ask for a financially beneficial club as your first feeder club at a big team- can mean upto an extra £120m per year :)

Nice - thanks Golly!
