Firefox 6 breaks out ahead of schedule, gets official August 16th -- Engadget

Firefox version 6 is almost upon us, making it the third major release this year. It promises the usual enhancements of speed and efficiency, but I can't help thinking that 5 and 6 should really be 4.1 and 4.2
Maybe they're just a bit envious that IE is on version 9 now, and Chrome is going through versions faster than ... um... something rather quick.

They're only doing it because Chrome is on a much more impressive-sounding release schedule afaik, it's probably going to play havoc with add-on devs. Firefox 6 and 7 are only going to be small performance improvement updates. Apparently FF 8 is 20% faster than FF5, so nothing to get too excited about yet.

How was 4 a disappointment? The step up from 4 to 5 was minor to say the least but I thought there were good improvements (especially in performance) from 3.x to 4.

Firefox became my third choice browser after the launch of 4. It's just slow compared to the competition.

They'll get a lot more respect from people "in the know" if they stop numbering their versions to keep the retards happy.

"oooh, bigger number, must be better!"

It wasn't as instantly usable and the memory leak issue is still there.

An overly fussy change with little or no real bearing on the end product.

Well, just upgraded to 6. It upgraded my flash player & got rid of a couple of old Java thingies. Seems faster....

I've rolled back to 5.0 for now, I kept getting 30 second freezes every 5 mins or so in 6.0.

Can't say 6 is any different on mine. Maybe jump to 6.0.2?

I got those freezes in 4 or 5 I think. I put it down to a dodgy addon so disabled everything but it still happened. Then it just kind of... fixed itself and, touch wood, hasn't happened since.

I tried 6.0.2 as well, same issue. It's not any of my addons either as far as I know as they were the first thing I disabled. Googling a bit it seems that upgrading it might break it in rare cases, and I should do a fresh install. Can't really be bothered with that as 5.0 works just fine for now, but I'm guessing thats the solution.

Yeah i'm getting the "Not responding" crap every few minutes as well on 6.02, seriously annoying the crap out of me, never had anything like this on older versions.

I re-installed everything from scratch, copy-pasted my old settings back in and it has stopped freezing. So I guess the upgrade broke something.

Can see just within 30mins of using this new Firefox that the memory issue seems to be fixed, touching wood though (...)

On all previous Firefox versions in Task Manager, Firefox would consistantly use 600k memory regardless of how many tabs were open - Whereas Chrome would only use about 100k.

This new Firefox is now using about 160k, which is a huge difference between the old versions......

....

But as i was typing this, i got the old "Not responding" shit, ahh fucksake :m00:

It's pointless, chrome works and I have no idea what version it is without checking... it updates silently and doesn't bug me. FF and IE make a big song and dance over new version numbers yet still have worse browsers.

How does FF make a big song and dance? I'd rather click continue to update than have a google process constantly running in the background.

At least Firefox have addressed (or are in the process of addressing) their horrendous memory leak problems. There's a noticeable improvement in performance and on paper so FF is still king of the hill afaic.
