Either that or the airflow under your desk is bad.

What case do you have? I think you mentioned earlier that it was a quiet case, they don't cope too well with overclocking, in my experience.

Another thing, how are the cables within the system, have 'you cable-tied' them off to help with airflow?

The case is an Accousticase 6607:

I have 2x120 mm quiet but decent airflow fans, the 120mm AF80C spec from:

http://www.quietpc.com/uk/casefans.php

Front fan sucks, rear fan blows backwards, CPU fan blows down onto the speedtech heatsink, PSU is 460W and fairly new. I haven't cable tied all the cables, but most are tucked out of the way. The HDD is SATA for a thinner cable, but I do have 2 IDE-style ribbons, one for my sound card the other for the DvD, although generally the case is not 'cluttered'.

I think one problem IS the airflow under the desk - the back panel may be obscuring the vent at the back preventing effecient ******d flow. I do think also that the general dynamics of the airflow around the CPU is not great.... the CPU is not very far from the rear fan so the air blowing down onto the CPU my be getting 'dragged' away towards the vent rather than onto the CPU.

I can try moving the whole kit, but pulling it away from the back panel didn't appear to make much difference... only taking off the side panel brought temps right back down.

Hmm.... rear exhaust additions? One of those angled fans that sits across the PCI screws? Suggestions?

Ok, looking at the case you're going to have higher temperatures simply due to all the acoustic insulation, which unfortunately tends to double as thermal insulation!

Ideas to help airflow:

Look at getting rounded IDE cables where you can use them, and make sure all the cabling is tidied away (this may not help things that much though)
What way do the PSU fan/fans work? And do they suck/blow over the CPU? Depending on this you may want to swap the direction of the case fan near the CPU (I would say that, from looking at the design of the case, you're probably overheating because your not getting enough airflow into the case)
You may not need a slot blower, as I think it's an inflow problem, not an outflow one

PSU blows out of the back of the case - it's a Qtechnology 460W unit with 120mm fan:

http://www.quietpc.com/uk/psu.php#qtechnology

I called the case manufacturer and had a chat - ideas include upping the fan on the CPU to a 92 mm (I have a suitable fan adapter funnel-type bit of placcy), adding an angle btacket fan, but I think you may be right, Inactionman, so I am looking at specs of 120mm case fans to replace the existing one with more airflow.... gonna be a bit noisy methinks :eek7:

Yeah, unfortunately if you're not getting enough cool air into the case, any extra fans you put inside will actually just make things hotter! Although the CPU temp may drop a bit, case temp will go up.

I assume you're using the fans from the same retailer? If so, you can get fans that have triple the CFM (Deltas), but at triple to quadruple the noise! Normally you have to make a trade off between overclocking and noise, especially as a lot of low noise components (graphics cards, etc.) are actually underclocked to make them quieter.

Fook! I just thought of something.... I think (maybe) a couple of PCI slots haven't got their blanking covers back in place, which might mean that the air is coming in and passing underneath the relevant components and out through the PCI slots...
