Can you file share between two PCs via router, where one is connected with an ethernet cable and one by USB? Or is it better to connect the computers directly to each with their ethernet ports?

The last time I did this, about three years ago, was with a flatmate and we had to add an ethernet card to our PCs and I had to have my computer switched on for him to use the internet - we had no router then.

as long as one computer can see the other, possibly best through tcp/ip, it doesn't really matter how they are connected to a switch or router.

btw, if both the computers have firewire ports and you happen to have such a cable, a direct connection between the two through a fw cable will offer the fastest method for file transfer.

You have a router and are connected to it with USB? Why?

Can the computers ping each other? If they were both connected by ethernet then this would be easy to setup. I'm not sure what the USB connection is pretending to be, it may be pretending to be a network card, or it may simply be a direct connection to the router (and not the network)

I would imagine that the usb connection is a virtual ethernet port, if that's the case you should have 0 problem connecting the two if they're both plugged in to the router.

Yes, its called a "Network" and its this wonderful piece of technology where you can connect computers together... ISN'T IT WONDERFUL!!!

No, because the USB connected computer will think of the router more like a modem, fuck knows why they are connected to it like that in the first place :eek6: every "modern" computer comes with on-board LAN as standard.

what do you think? :twak: im sure the router would have more than one Ethernet port on it...

And did you find it beneficial 3 years ago when you were able to share files, documents and your porn collection? at least now you can switch off your computer and realise he's the bastard hogging the bandwidth for the latest "teen" movie

I pray you recognised the sarcasm in this post, its purely dripping in it! :p

and if you dont... oh god :(

Well that was a useless reply.

go with either the firewire or plugging them both via ethernet into the router.

You will also need to share those folders you want the over PC to access...

Also, if both PC's are running firewall software then you probably need to add the IP range the router dishes out to the PC's on some form of 'trusted' list to allow windows file sharing to work properly.

Thanks everyone, I got it working. It was two ethernet connections to a router, not a USB thing at all. I got a bit stuck until I realised one of the PCs had that stupid Zone Alarm thing on it. :)
