If I had to take one fantasy series with me to a deserted island it would be:
George R R Martin - A song of Ice and Fire:
Book one: A Game of Thrones
Book two: A Clash of Kings
Book three: A Storm of Swords
Book four: A Feast for Crows

This is like the Rolls Royce of fantasy. It's amazing stuff. Highly recommended

If you like LoTR you HAVE to read the silmarillion
Try some Jacqueline Carey, Kushiels dart series (lots of hanky panky)
Can't go wrong with David Gemmell (R.I.P )
Steven erikson if you like deep, epic (and a bit slow) fantasy
Robin Hobbs assassin series
Or go for the classics, Gene wolfe, Jack vance, Michael moorcock etc

Oh and guy gavriel kay is fabby

Early eddings is good if your 12 or like your fantasy nice n simple, not R jordans fantasy-for-the-braindead simple, but simple simple

These books are absolutely awesome - really interesting and exciting plots.

I'd also recommend anything by David Gemmell (RIP ) A truly excellent writer.

If you're into historical fiction/fantasy I'd recommend the Boudicca series (Dreaming the Eagle, Dreaming the Bull, Dreaming the Hound etc) or the Emperor books by Conn Iggulden. Also anything by Bernard Cornwell - in particular the Arthur trilogy (The Winter King, Enemy of God and Excalibur)

I guess you could translate "good and happy" into if you never read a book before and are ~12 years old, Eddings books are a great way to get started reading.

If you are a bit older and have been reading books for some time, you will find the Eddings books to be extreamly simple and naive. Wheel of Time have the same simplisity about it, still reading that one tho as I started with it when first book came out so wanna finnish it.

I totally agree. the author is a cold hearted fellow (those that read the books should get it). But that is what makes the books so wonderful, it's no fun when you can guess the storyline

I read 5-6 of her books ages ago, thos as its a series I'd recomend the first one in it to start with. Anyways was the one with Nevyn and all what goes around. It keep jumping back and forth in time and people getting reborn and finding eachother again and all that kind of things. I realy liked it while I was reading it (10 years ago or so)

it is more addictive but i find it kinda depressing... spend all that time building up characters that you grow to love...

Noonshade.
3/4 more - cant remeber the names of others ofhand.

Chronicles of raven series of books by James Barclay, action packed reading and they kept me gripped for ages.

Raymond feist stuff also an excellent read and the George RR Martin books are also excellent, just depends how 'serious' you lik your fantsy as far as I see it.

On a side note, Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb is amazing, also Orcs by Stan Nicholls really one of the best and funniest books I have ever read.

Here here! Wheel of Time books are crap tbh.

Silmarillion is a very hard book to read tho, the furthest I have ever got through it is about a third of the way thru, but after I finish re-reading LOTRs (again) I'm giving it another try, as the story is amazing.

David Gemel is brilliant, especailly his Drenai series, and also his Rigante series.

Steven Erickson is about my favourite author atm, his books just get better and better, I can wait for him to release the next one, after the way he ended Bonhunters.

I have read the first book of Eragon now, and ordered the 2nd, and want something that is quite similar to that(Fantasy books like LOTR etc).

So I was wondering if any of you had read something you want to share with me.

I also found one triology that seemed rather intresting (Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud), and wondered if anyone had read it? And could give me some advice if I should buy it or not.

David Eddings have a pretty damn good selection of books he wrote, and so does Terry Goodkind (yeah love that lastname), and Roger Zelazny.

all those 3 write fantasy books simmilar to JRR tolkien....

Hmms, perhaps terry goodkind's sword of truth series? Main character "levels up" a lot in that, and dragons.
Magician - feist? Stableboy becomes uber-wizard-of-teh-pwn (like rerolling your skald to a warlock)
Michael moorcock's elric books. One of the best characters in fantasy, ever (imo) + dragons
Harry potter!!!

What about some historical stuff? Conn Iggulden's emperor books give an entertaining tale of caesers rise. No dragons though

Prolly not a good idea to read song of ice and fire either, as most of the main characters die. It is however incredibly epic, with real depth and writing that grabs you by the nads and drags you through all 800 pages in a flash. and baby dragons!

I know you don't like sci-fi, but maybe try Dune. Sandworms are like dragons, right?

The Amber series from Roger Zelazny is sold in 1 book on amazon for a good price. Nice read and ordered the bundle after reading it from bib.

Robin Hobb is class.

Terry Pratchett's discworld series (over 20 books) are fun to read. The first 10 anyway, haven't got any further so far. Nice read inbetween, no need to read in order as the stories are separate (except for 1 and 2).
