Right
For games, ISDN is the way to go.
Cable is a little on off, for some its great, pings lovely, smooth dloads, for others its shite.
ADSL : Because the bandwidth is shared, it only takes 8 people on your local exchange (sharing your lovely bandwidth) to make it hardly better then a modem for dloading.. otherwise, pingage, ok you might ping 40 odd at 3am in the morning, otherwise you'll be lucky to dip much below 80 when the exchange is busy.
Ok on isdn downloads arent great, but the pings, personally i ping from 30-40 on my free isp later on in the evening.
Im happy with that. Its not expensive at all, i personally only pay 60 quid a quarter, but there are many packages available, takes a little research etc.
Theres my two pennies worth :)

Ok,

I've heard, but not personally experienced, that ADSL is not very good for gaming. That is, ISDN and cable are both better for gaming than the performance delivered by ADSL. This information came from people actually on the test. Considering they probably weren't anywhere near filling the contention ratio this is a bad sign. Over in the USA they generally operate a 6:1 ratio, while here you get a 50:1 ratio. On ISDN you get 1:1 and on cable you get 2:1. Do the maths, see where that leaves you.

Personally I have cable, pings are great, d/l's are great, seen plenty of the on but none of the off. Pings to BW servers are <50 as a rule, and even to NGI I get <80.

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse.

Short answer: Get ISDN.
Don't bother waiting in anticipation for ADSL as BT has delayed it yet again. The fact that the "When can i get it" section of www.btopenworld.com not mentioning a date should give you the general idea. If you do get a chance to get ADSL, it may be better to get a Business version off someone other than BT, as i think the Home User versions are a raw deal.

As long as your local segment isn't overloaded (cable doesn't guarantee bandwidth) Cable should be very good. Again the killer is availability, though NTL and TeleWest have better track records than BT.

I can speak first hand about adsl.. It's nice, downloads are insane.. I've never seen any sign of the contention ratio, speeds are a constant 80k a sec, sometimes going into the 100's..

I have the business package (1meg) and the pings are a solid 70 in q2.. Not the best for gaming admitidly, but it serves me fine.

Cable would be the obvious choice, but it's not available across most of the country yet.

I wouldn't listen to Kryten he seems to be going a little wrong regarding ADSL.

Necro, as a user of cable, Telewest DO guarantee bandwidth. That is where the contention ratio of 2:1 comes from, they guarantee a minimum connection of 256k, which is far better than either of BT's offerings.

N3uromancer, how much does that connection cost? Certainly sounds expensive.

I've had ISDN (courtesy of work) for the last two years connecting via Demon.
The ping I get to game servers varies quite a bit (I think this is down to the load on my particular corner of the 'net) but I average I guess 40-60. I have seen it drop to 25 briefly, and at peak times it can go as high as 80.
Downloads are usually steady at 6k, I've not tried using both channels.
I don't know the cost as work picks up the bill :^P
In my experience the crucial part of the ISDN connection is your terminal adaptor. For 18 months in ignorance I was using the adaptor that came with the line, a BT Ignition external job (don't even consider this heap of crap). This gave me a ping that never dropped below 80. I was enlightened by a friend who recommended an internal card by Asus and now I'm more than happy with my connection.

Well that's my tuppence worth.

It could be ADSL users with home packages who are in areas with lots of people signed up.

I hope Meddle is right about Telewest. Since i've given up on getting ADSL in Bristol. (i'll probably get ISDN as backup anyway, as well as Cable)..

I didn't think BT offered 1Megabit connections..

Cable: Fast surfing, great gaming, shared bandwidth with 1 other person.

Go cable

far superior to anything else for its price

i pay 40 quid a month, d/l at about 50k a sec and have a ping of 30-40 BW on servers

I wouldn't go for either atm. Neither have been under much use so you can't really comment on how good they are going to be which is when most ae likely to get it.

Damnit Emb, you trying to be cybercop? Context is a free reign, self-imposed limitation. Make your own mind up, if you have one to make.
