guys, starting to get hacked off with this type of error that I am receiving.

qt error.jpg

I receive it when I

Always when I try Help --> Update existing software in Quicktime
Most of the time when I try and play a quicktime clip inside Firefox
Occasionally when I am running HLSW

remember - they are SIMILAR errors within the applications.

I have tried :

Updating (reinstalling) quicktime
Updating Firefox (no updates available)
reinstalling HLSW

any hints to a starting point, or should I go straight for a memory tester?

Rather common with Quicktime - like all Apple software it's about as stable as Amy Winehouse in her dealer's place on payday.

I'm obviously putting a guess on Quicktime being the culprit as a) all 3 apps you've posted there relate to it in one way or another and b) I've seen it before.

Kill off Quicktime entirely and install Quicktime Alternative and see if that yeilds better results, but I dont know if HLSW will work with it, never tried.

Now, Quicktime is still fairly memory hungry - as is Firefox - so as you mentioned there may be a memory issue. Try the above first as it's easiest, then run memtest on the system overnight.

Check for updated Gfx Drivers, it can be the core of the problem.
Ofc u should check if there are updates for Quicktime also.
Another suggestion (Gfx related anyway):
open the QuickTime control panel. Go to the "Advanced" tab. Select "Safe mode (GDI only)". Apply it and try.

Updated drivers for gfx and downloaded latest Quicktime - still getting the error

open the QuickTime control panel. Go to the "Advanced" tab. Select "Safe mode (GDI only)". Apply it and try.

did this and it now no longer gives the error (at least from within Quicktime)

keeping the fingers crossed that this is it fixed,

Thanks Gahn

Still strongly suggest removing anything Apple branded on the system and using Quicktime Alternative, which I have confirmed works wonders with HLSW.
You know just how bad Apple are with software when they're bettered by 3rd party bedroom programmers.

iTunes, ouch :/ There are alternatives for that, too :D
Apple are very much like Creative and ATI - utterly clueless in the software department.

I can't speak for an iTunes alternative, but Quicktime - it is actually called Quicktime Alternative (same folks as Real Althernative) :

Free-Codecs.com : QuickTime Alternative 2.4.0 : QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player.

Comes bundled with Media Player Classic etc. No idea if it works with iTunes.

I agree :)

Apple computers are great, and they have many fans, but their software for Windows is at best adequate. It's bloated, it doesn't integrate with the Windows UI, and it has a bad habit of requiring unwanted components (why can't I download iTunes without Quicktime?).

Heaven knows that Apple are not alone in producing software like this, but the sad truth is that if you want to use Apple software, buy a Mac :)

Anyway, rants aside, I hope everything gets sorted Laz. I had a similar problem a while back and I ended up formatting the system, so I hope such drastic action isn't neccessary in your case :)

Kind regards

No it does not work with itunes, and there are no alternatives to itunes if you have the latest ipod devices.
