EMA.. anyone in the know?

I have a problem and could do with some sort of answer before tomorrow..

Whether you agree with it or not, people get EMA for going to college. Now I qualify for EMA, so thats all sorted. However the government guidelines say you need to attend 12hours of study a week (or greater) to get the money as you need to be classed as a full time student. I do 3subjects which works out at 13.5hours a week. So I meet that requirement.

My college have placed me on 'directed studies' which involves sitting in the library and doing work/reading/whatever for 4.5hours a week which is additional. For whatever reasons (I happen to have quite a genuine one) I don't attend.

Because I dont attend directed studies (but attend all my other lessons which amount to above 12hours a week) I havn't got any EMA payments. Are college allowed to put additional 'subjects' on like this and stop me getting my EMA because I dont attend sitting in the library? I personaly think I should be getting the money because I have enough lessons to class me as a full time student by the government.. AND many other of my friends DONT have directed study, just 3 lessons, and they DO get EMA. I have told the people in charge about this (but not mentioned any names) and they just say 'Well they are a blip on the radar, everyone should be doing directed studies'

Im meeting with the principle tomorrow, so any words of advice? can they do this or not?

afaik i remember from college you have to do everything they designate and think you need to do to accomplish what ever. though if you got a genuine reason (like you goto hospital or something every week) then i would say its unfair.

i never got EMA though so i can only go by what other people said. if the lads didnt get their sheet signed by each tutor they were timetabled with they didnt get anything

Why begin work then when he should be entitled to £30 a week for continuing education? ;o And all you people who work, seem to complain 24/7 about how shit it is, so if I were him I'd put it off for as long as possible ;d

People work and pay taxes for a reason and i would perfer it if my taxes were spent on something more worthwhile than essentially oxygen thieves.


By all means go to college and university and get educated and get yourself a good,well paid job, but please don't expect me to pay for it every month.*

By work I mean the work to get the qualification. I'm a student myself atm. I dont get paid to be a student, I pay through the nose to be one.

I was looking for cheap flights and £30 a week isn't hard to build up but regardless of the rights/wrongs of EMA, its available to me and im just asking if college are allowed to do what they're doing..

Well theres no sheet its just a central attendance database which its worked out off. I attend all my normal lessons, just not this directed study which they seemed to have attached on to my timetable, where as other people don't have it but they're just 'blips in the radar'

well thats tough shit isnt it. i have to work for 4.45 an hour while someone else gets paid 6 an hour for the same thing. not everything is the same for everyone and not everything is always fair.

if you dont want to go, thats upto you. though you cant complain if you dont get paid.

suddenly my tutor is whacking in another hour of law classes for us, because he wants to. it doesnt happen to other courses, OH GOD NOES.

I'm at uni. The only TV we could afford was a rubbish one from one of those second hand bargain basement type places - and it broke 3 days after its warranty expired.

Its like a weekly payment they give people between ages of 16-18 for going to college if their household income is less than 30grand

Anyway, the government say a full time student (for purposes of EMA) is 12hours a week which I meet.

If people get their EMA without having directed studies, yet having the same lessons as me, why the hell should I need to go, obviously you don't need to go to meet requirements..

i used it to finance my first year of uni!

not sure about that mate. i do about 16-20 hours a week at uni, plus another 15-20 hours working for money.

and how ever many i can be arsed to do for work outside of uni
