not sure about that mate. i do about 16-20 hours a week at uni, plus another 15-20 hours working for money.

and how ever many i can be arsed to do for work outside of uni :)

But uni is all about self-motivated study.

College is clearly about getting free money you have not earned and spening it on tv's and subway

Its not free money though, it's mine and every other tax payers money being wasted on things(just for a change).

When i went to college if you wanted money you got a saturday job or went and stacked shelves of an evening, i see no real reason the the same should not apply now (apart from unemployment figures would be higher).

and lots of poorer people wouldn't be able to go in to full time education.

It amazes me how many of you get left on the political compass yet you're up in arms about people getting ema.

Leave the fuckin guy alone because his asking a legitimate question and he doesn't want whine from a bunch of twats (usual suspects too may I add).

That said, I can ask my gf for you if you like but I know she HAS to do 2 hour study periods (much like you are made to do the library sessions) before she is allowed out of school etc. for the day.

On a tangential note, it's funny how that, now my family's finally managed to get a stable (albeit meagre) income, I'm going to be worse off in future due to the student finance bracketing stuff. So far I've been getting all the possible loan and tutor fees paid and so on. They assume that with a slightly better income, my parents will be able to help me out with finances - which is true to an extent, but not to the extent of being able to pay the the entire mass of fees or whatever. So next year, I'm going to be relying on whatever I've saved up over the summer and whatever's left of my current savings (which pretty much just amount to frugal hoarding of birthday/christmas money ever since I was little) to feed myself, and will be even further in debt.

If I could sit in a library for 4.5 hours for an extra £30 a week, I would.

Aye Lou

the minute you get ahead in England and get yourself working you get penalised. If you're 1p over the 'threshold' you get sod all.

On topic

Earl:

Directed Studies are part of the course that you're doing, needed for your key skills or just their to piss you off. You will find that some courses need to do them, some students need to do them or some colleges want people to do them. Whether it's fair or not is irrelevent.

Yes the college is within it's rights to ask you to attend directed study and once you've met the principal I think you'll be left under that impression. Some colleges actually kick people for not attending directed studies so consider yourself lucky to just be missing your EMA.

My wife used to work in a support section in a college taking abuse from little feckers who did feck all, didn't do what they were asked and when they didn't get their £30 moaned about the unfairness of life. I have fuck all sympathy for you, just do the extra study, it will pay you back if you decide to continue on in your studies later.

Do ya fucking work...

I don't disagree with EMA per se, but I do get fucked off that my son isn't eligible for it, so I support him (fair enough) and then pay shitloads of fucking taxes so that loafing chav ***** can pretend to go to his course and be given 30 quid a week for it :twak:

Yeah, but us lefties bauk at the fact that you are using it to pay for a holiday and therefore it's not going to help a poorer student, which means the system is essentially fucked up :)

maybe im just sour that i could never get it, even though my family was poor, but i agree. EMA is supposed to help you maintain education and life, hence the education maintainance part of the name.

the fact you can afford to save it up everyweek to take your manwhore to europe for the weekend (which btw, will cost you more than you realise) clearly means you dont need it.
you must be getting support from some other place to help buy food, books etc.

if earl didnt come moaning like a little fucker that OMG he has an extra class to attend (but oh shit no one else does) he may of got some better responses.

Just adding my 2p.

TBH I can only echo what most others have said. Suck it up. Do the required courses and get your handouts which you seem not to actually need or stop bitching.

I've had a job ever since I was 16. Working evenings and weekends around full time education until I went into full time employment.

I've got no sympathy for people like you and I think it's easy to see not many other people round here do either.

Imagine if they took all those £30 bribes to increase their art science AS level numbers and instead invested it in the struggling physics/chemistry university departments that actually need the money?

My old department at Reading uni is shortly to close, Exeter Chemistry closed a couple of years back, more are to close soon.

These payments are a bribe by labour to sweeten their stats. They dont provide any real benefit. The money should go to parents to help support their kids, not to the kids. I didnt know how to spend responsibly when I was 16, and I barely know how now.

As for the intelligent, but poor people : there are plenty of loans available for less well of students. There are even still grants available if you are really skint. If you have the talent there is financial aid available.

And before you say poor people cant pay the loans back - if they are not going to work hard and get good qualifications and thus a good job on the back of the loans, what the fuck are they doing getting them out?

Fuck the left, this country needs some dictatorship.

I am an intelligent, poor person. The only bursary/grant shit I can find at Edinburgh University (where I study) is stuff like: "Awarded annually to undergraduates in second or later years bearing the surname of Carmichael or Gillies."

To be fair, he was only asking a question.

I know for a fact that any chance I can get, I'll screw the IR for every penny of tax I can reclaim. I don't care, if I could get away with paying £1 tax a year, I'd do it.

Earl, I think you're going to have to do as you're told if you want that money. Its only 5 hours a week, £6 an hour, thats more than minimum wage.

Even if I WAS scottish, what difference would it make? The only "talent-based" things they give out are awards to the single top student in a particular year, usually to the tune of £100.
I've placed pretty highly so far, but out of some 200+ students it seems a bit unlikely I'll ever get my hands on anything like that.
A one-off prize of £100 to one student per year can hardly count as 'financial aid for talent'.

I had my meeting and put my point across and as much as the principle understood what I was saying, he couldn't just take me off it as that would allow anyone to do the same. He agreed that it was unfair that theres basically a 2 tier system and that people who have EMA and directed studies are more affected by it than those who have no EMA but anyway, we decided that I would attend for the 4.5hours but instead I would do it flexible so I could go to the library when I feel most motivated, or simply when I actually have work to do, which was one of my main moans about directed study, so thats sorted.

Thanks :)

edit: I did ring the Dfes and they confirmed that it was up to the college to decide what was needed to fulfill your study.

How is it unfair? Sure, you have to attend for the marks, but does everyone else get a free £30 a week? I'm not saying i disagree with EMA but i really can't see how it's unfair :/

I wonder how many of those not on EMA would go to Directed Studies if they got £30 for it.

That's a fair point. So you're saying there'd be more in the way of this sort of thing at an English university?
(As I implied, I'm not Scottish. So apparently I'm getting the worst of both financial worlds.)

your fucking shitting us, right? how are you more effected than someone who doesn't get any money?
so now you don't have to attend unless you can be arsed, is what your saying.

your one seriously ungrateful lazy little fuck. how the fuck you expected any sympathy or help here is beyond me. you moan because you cant get your FREE money easily enough. then somehow your more under privileged than someone who doesn't get any free money.

i cant wait till you get a job and actually need to work for your money. maybe you will come here moaning because its too much effort, and maybe your employer should give you the money anyway, but you will only goto work when you feel motivated to goto work.

its fuckers like you that piss me right off. i haven't sworn this much for a long time

well you can get the student loan to pay fees, cover living expenses and then some more money on top of that. depending how skint you are you can also get grants/bursaries. when you earn a minimum of 15k i think you pay it back at around a fiver per week.

I think he was on about sponsorship rather than performance related grants, some companies (and even the MoD) will pay to put people through Uni in the hope they'll stay on with the company afterwards. Problem is they rare as hens teeth and you have to have very good A-level results to stand a remote chance of selection.

Yeah, I know - but this was in response to the "if you have the talent there is financial aid available", which doesn't necessarily seem to be the case. The full student loan leaves about £30 a week (I seem to remember from my last calculations) after rent, which isn't much, really; that doesn't even usually cover just my food expenses (and it's lucky I don't actually do anything much or else that would be more of a problem). (I'll qualify that by pointing out, again, that having to live on a gluten-free diet means none of the really cheap foodstuffs are an option for me.)

It's the "grants/bursaries" thing I'm talking about now - Edinburgh University doesn't really seem to have any.

Sorry, yeah. If that's what he was talking about, I'd respond by saying that, while there do appear to be sponsorships going around for subjects such as informatics here, there's sweet fuck-all that I've found for mathematics - my degree subject. Which is interesting given how often I hear "there aren't enough mathematicians any more" floating around.

Thinking about it, it's quite possible that I've unwittingly wound up at the most expensive and least helpful place to study this.

What ch3tan said.

As for "Intelligent people in shit jobs because they are too poor to get further educated" i think you might find they would rise within the ranks of any organisation thru experience and constant displays of said intelligence.

Or is intelligence only measured by examination results?

Is lack of feeling motivated your "quite genuine reason" for not doing this in the first place? Oh, Earl  Kidney Dialysis is a genuine reason. Apathy is not.

omg - you don't read Dilbert ?

...or work in the typical office where brown-nosers and yes-men get promoted year on year

The only intelligence required in the modern business is knowing when your project still looks viable to others but is actually doomed because you are as incompetant as all the others. Then you skillfully pass it on to someone else, who may be intelligent enough to realise they are being landed in the shit but their boss has already been persuaded so tough doodoo.

*bitter*
